WeÕve all seen the words on billboards and boardwalks, on Wall Street and Main Street, in malls and on menus. Whether they are used by Madison Avenue moguls or Mom and Pop yokels, they craft curiosity in a new product or service. For Hollywood, intense interest in a movie leads to peak profits at the box office. The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins, has broken records by becoming the biggest three-day opener in US box office history. Its midnight showing took in $18.4 million, and on July 19, the take was $66.4 million. The three-day total was $155.3 million. Sorry Spidey! That money is good for the bottom line, but the bottom line must continue to be replenished. The work never ends.
Those fortunate enough to read or hear a scroll read during Old Testament times knew a Messiah was coming, but they werenÕt sure how soon. The priests, at that time, had to make daily blood sacrifices for the sins of the people and themselves. Their work was never-ending, but the FatherÕs plan included the coming of His Son, the Lamb of God, who would reveal the glory of God and be sacrificed just once to reconcile sinful man to God. He was crucified, died, and was buried. Then He rose from the dead and sat down at the FatherÕs right hand. His work in securing salvation for the elect was finished. However, itÕs the work of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of those Christ has chosen that makes believers come to life. ItÕs His quickening power Š wrought by grace Š that saves us from an eternity in hell.
In New Testament times, Christ first revealed His plan to the men He chose to be his mouthpiece. The Holy Spirit came upon those men and others and filled them with power to recall GodÕs wonders on the Day of Pentecost. Those men spoke in tongues, and the people around them all heard what was said in their own languages. The purpose was a sign for the Jews concerning GodÕs coming judgment. Yet, on that day, 3000 were added to the church.
GodÕs plan has never changed. It has always been in the Scriptures, hidden from the untrained, unaided eye, the unopened heart. But He is continuing to build His church from a world of sinful men, women and children. As He does, our resident teacher, who lives within us, lets us know that Jesus is coming again. In the midst of all the chaos in the world and our own lives, He lets us know that we are safe and secure and that, once again, Jesus Christ is Coming Soon! Hopeful, we shout the words of the Apostle John: Come quickly Lord Jesus!
