a hot meal at the church’s
free weekly luncheon,
volunteers anxious to do
their bit for Jesus,
bless them all. Gathered in
the corridor a culture
of excitement, crowd-lineup
waiting, tummies
grumbling.
”What’s on today?” a voice
asks. “Had hamburger,
lasagna, soup ‘n sandwiches
the last couple weeks.”
“Leftovers,” someone jokes.
Hurry, chairs filling up. There’s
Hank and Dolores as usual
without a flash of cash,
bumming smokes, happy in their
friendships, wary of two others
snatching the best street bench
this morning. “Surprise,” a
voice finally answers, “Today’s
menu is barbecued chicken.”
“Yesterday, Mary Lou had
a baby,” another voice adds.
