Chen was feeling much better today. The medical team had done a great job with his injuries. Although no major surgery was necessary, Chen still needed timely attention to his wounds. Commander Gabriel provided personal wheelchair pushing service as he wheeled Chen into Ming’s room. Ming jumped out of her bed and raced to Chen.
“Chen!!! I am so happy to see you!”
“Okay sis. Don’t smother me here. I’m better but I still need my space,” Chen said.
Ming was happy to see her brother was well enough to humor her. He was a cad and he played that role to the hilt. Ming didn’t mind. He was in better health and not chained to a prison wall.
Ming thanked Commander Gabriel.
“We are so grateful to you Commander ---,” Ming started. “Gabe” he interrupted.
“I’m sure you two are curious about what happened and who we are. Let’s give you the guided tour.”
Gabe was joined by nurses and attendants from the medical staff as they aided Ming and Chen in the tour.
“I can’t tell you where we are but I assure you that you are safe.” Ming and Chen were stunned as they approached an opening at the end of the hall to a large hangar which appeared to be carved out inside a giant cave. There was every kind of military hardware – jets, tanks, vehicles, helicopters - as far as the eye could see in every direction.
“You are an army?” Ming asked.
Gabe, in his southern drawl, responded: “Well, I guess you could say that....more like God’s army.”
Chen asked: “What country? The United States?”
“No, we are a volunteer force of many nations.” Gabe answered.
“I don’t understand,” Ming replied. She was puzzled. What kind of military would fight for God with physical weapons of jets, tanks and machine guns?
“I know what you must be thinking,” Gabe said. “We fight both spiritual and physical battles to save missionaries around the world.”
The tour ended inside the massive control room overlooking the hangar. Video and computer screens filled a wall on one side of the room. Each monitor showed scenes from another country somewhere in the world. Technicians sat at the consoles and communicated with the various units within the complex and in other locations in the world.
Chen marveled at all the technical equipment. He put his foot out to stop the momentum of his wheelchair so he could leer at the console in front of him.
“This is amazing,” Chen said. “The reception on these LCD monitors are almost High Definition quality. Almost like you’re right there!”
“You know something about these gizmos?” Gabe asked.
Ming answered quickly: “He is a geek. He loves all those gadgets and - what you call them? Gizmos?”
As Chen stared at the console, he was unaware that Gabe was staring at him and had the look of wonder in his eyes. Gabe had a hunch about Chen. He wondered but didn’t voice his thoughts at the moment.
Chen and Ming were taken back to a shared room. They would soon be returned to their mission headquarters in South Korea. Their wounds would be healed enough and strength regained to return to their mission for God. This experience with God’s Army - this Gideon Force - was a faith builder. They were not alone in this fight.
Back in his office, Gabe leaned back with his head against the head rest of his chair. He had given tours for missionaries before. He always felt a sense of fulfillment when they had a successful mission to rescue those in the field. This time was no different. He knew that the missionaries all wanted to return to their calling. Even back into the danger. This was their mission. Ming and Chen would soon go back. Well, at least
Ming would be going. Gabe sat forward and looked again at a folder. He read the papers in the folder. It was all the information that his intelligence staff had provided on Chen Michu.
Chen......would it be the right choice to invite him to join Gideon Force? He had a hunch about Chen’s talents and abilities. Especially in the technical field. Recruiting....Gabe had to lean back in his chair and laugh to himself about what he was doing. How did he end up here himself? Reminiscing about his past, Gabe never dreamed he would be recruiting people to join an elite commando force or even being
the commander of such a unit.
Gabe began to think back to that Sunday years ago when his life was transformed.....
