I've never met a man
with the name John Calvin,
but some people always bring him up
when they write me off.
It seems I just can't speak my mind
without being associated with a man I never met.
And when I talk of Peter, James and John,
or even Paul,
some folks seem only to hear
"John Calvin!"
I can't even walk down the isle
without meeting critical glances and hearing whispers
that I'm one of them... "Calvinist," they say.
Sometimes I just smile, and chuckle for a while,
because it makes me think,
"They probably have just never read the Bible."
