Apologetics
Linda and Danielle were members of my church, and my friends. They were both murdered, apparently by a man who had earlier killed his own in-laws. Why did they die?
Genesis Chapters one and two describe how God created a perfect world, and placed man in charge of it. Chapter three describes how Satan, “more subtle than any beast of the field”, tempted Adam and Eve into rebelling against God. Thus, people and the earth itself were sold to Satan. Within one generation, Satan had men killing each other. Why do people kill? Because we chose to follow Satan, the enemy, and Satan is a murderer. Why did this man kill? Because he was sold out to Satan, one step at a time.
Why Linda and Danielle? Some would answer, wrongly, because of sin by them or someone in their family. Jesus’ disciples thought so: They asked Jesus, “Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2). Jesus answered, neither. Rather, it was so the works of God could be shown in him, and Jesus gave him his sight. But there is an entire book of the Bible dedicated to the question of why the innocent suffer. Job lost his herds, his children, the respect of his wife, everything. The book of Job has 31 chapters of his friends accusing him of sin, and him defending his righteousness and begging to know why God allowed him to suffer. Finally, God answers him out of the whirlwind.
And God never says why. The mystery of why God allows sin is answered in our rebellion, but some mysteries God reserves to Himself. Only God knows why individual innocents suffer or die. But we know their destiny: To be with God forever.
Linda and Danielle had many “why” questions, and most of the big “Why” questions are answered in the book of Genesis. Why is there sin? Our rebellion. Why are there layers of clams and sea life on all the continents? The world-wide flood (Chapters 6-8). Why do we eat meat? God gave it to Noah (Chapter 9). Why are there many nations? God scattered us and confused our language (Chapter 11). Why does God allow evil men to get away with it? HE DOES NOT! He used a flood to judge sin and to kill every sinner, saving only eight people (Chapter 6).
And He judged sin again, by having Jesus, His only begotten Son, die on the cross for us. And He will judge sin finally, by sending Satan and every sinner into the lake of fire forever. Before that happens, everyone needs to accept God’s sacrifice of His Son. If you will accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, that will be a major way for God to use these deaths for good. Please pray something like this: Father, I know that I have sinned and rebelled against You. I know that I deserve to go to Hell. But I also know that Jesus paid my penalty on the cross. I now accept Jesus as my Savior and as the Lord of my life. Jesus, please come into my heart to save me. Thank you.
He will not only be your fire insurance, but you will become an innocent, and He can become your life-long best friend.
I pray that Christians will use these events to witness to our friends, and that everyone will read the book of Genesis to learn the answers we all need to the great mysteries of life.
