Now Moses was
keeping the flock
of his father-in-law,
Jethro,
the priest of Midian,
and he led his flock
to the west side
of the wilderness....
And the angel of the
Lord
appeared to him
in a flame of fire....
[Exodus 3:1-2]
*************************
"MOSES!"

(Irritated sigh.)
"WHAT?
(Whiny grumble.)
HEY!
(Sorrowful grimmace.)
I took off MY SHOES!
(Squinty, sweaty face.)
What MORE d'Ya WANT?"

[PATIENT SHAKE OF THE HEAD.]
"A whole lot more,
My child.
Much more."

"What NOW?
HEY!
(Woeful look.)
Can I get BACK to my SHEEP...
NOW?"

[SOFT RUMBLE.]
"No, child.
Not yet."

(Impatiently shifting one bare
foot, and then another.)
"Hey, LORD?
My feet are HOT!
Can I put my SHOES back ON?"

"Uh uh."

"Can I sit DOWN?"

"Yes, child.
There's a rock, over there."

(Loud sigh of relief.)
(Loud voice.)
"Thank GOD!"

[GENTLE CHUCKLE.]
"You're welcome, Moses."

(Grumbly murmur.)
"How come the sand's so HOT
up HERE?"
(Tiptoe, rather quickly,
barefoot, across the hot
sand to the stingy-looking pointy
rock stickin' out of another
scrubby bush. The only other One
in sight is Burning.)
OUCH!
OUCH!"

[PATIENTLY WAITING.]

"OKAY, LORD!
(Grimmace.)
(Lift leg across the other.)
(Sorrowfully start rubbing
foot. Besides being flat,
with no discernible arch,
it's also rather stinging, now,
from the hot sand.)
(More sighing.)
I'm READY!
What's this ABOUT?"

"About My people, Moses."

(Impatiently interrupt.)
(Stop for a moment to
squint morosely at a
rough spot on
bottom of bare foot.)
"But, WAIT a minute, LORD!
WHO should I tell 'em,
SENT ME?"

[PATIENT NOD.]
"I AM."

"WHAT was that, LORD?
(Squint, rather squintedly,
across at Burning Bush.)
I didn't GET that last WORD!
You're .......WHAT?"

[PATIENT NOD.]
"I AM."

"WHAT was THAT?"
(Wave away desert gnat.)
WHAT was that, LORD?
(Lean toward Burning Bush,
rather squintedly.)
You're.....WHAT?"

"I AM,
Moses."

"You're.. WHAT?
(Cup hand to left ear.)
WHAT was THAT?"

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"I don't GET it, LORD!
What did'Ya say You WERE?"

"I AM."

(Irritated voice.)
(Loud sigh.)
(More grumbling.)
"You were... WHAT?
SAY THAT AGAIN?"

[PATIENTLY LOVING GAZE.]
"Listen, child.
[PATIENTLY GENTLE VOICE.]
Listen to Me, child."

(Grumbly voice.)
"Hey, LORD?
Do You know where I
put my jug 'a WATER?
I'm THIRSTY, up HERE!"
(Slip off uncomfortable, and
slightly-too-warm rock.)
(Get on hands and knees,
and squintedly look around, patting
at the hot sand.)
OUCH!
OUCH!"
(More squinting.)

"It's right there, child."
[PATIENT NOD.]

"Oh!
THERE it IS!
Hey, THANKS, LORD!"
(Ungracefully get back up
onto scrubby rock.)
(Hold jug in both leathery
hands, and drink.)
(Loud gulping noises.)
(Loud burp.)
AH!
WOW!
Was I THIRSTY!
(Sigh audibly and sorrowfully.)
(Set jug back down into sand.)
(Wipe scruffy beard with back
of leathery hand.)
Now, WHAT were Ya SAYIN',
LORD?
WHAT did'Ya say You WERE?"

"I AM."

(Squint thoughtfully.)
(Bite bottom, sunburnt lip.)
(Scratch top of scruffy hair,
through scratchy head covering.)
(Frown down at hot, sandy, and
forty-year-old flat feet.)
"I STILL don't GET it!
WHAT did'Ya SAY?
(Squint, rather nearsightedly,
again, at Burning Bush.)
You're..........WHAT?"

[WISE, ALL-KNOWING NOD.]
"That is all you need to know,
My child."

(Shrug scrawny shoulders.)
(Lift hands up in extremely
helpless gesture.)
"But.......I don't KNOW NOTHIN'!"

[PATIENT SMILE.]
"Good, child.
Now, we're getting somewhere."
****************************
Then Moses said
to God,
If I come to the people
of Israel
and say to them,
The God
of your fathers
has sent me to you,
and they ask me,
What is his name?
What shall I say
to them?
God said to Moses,
I AM WHO I AM.
[Exodus 3:13-14]
