Children
Little Ben was pulling the weeds in his grandfather’s garden. He was sweating in the hot summer sun and was soon getting bored with all this pulling and cleaning. He had come to his grandfather’s house for his summer holidays as he loved his grandfather very much. But he really hated, this new job of cleaning the garden. He was murmuring in his heart for his tough time and remembered the story of Adam and Eve which his grandfather had told him. Understanding his frustration, grandfather asked him what was bothering him.
Ben said “ Granpa, if only Adam had not eaten the fruit of knowledge we would have now been in the garden of Eden, isn’t it? If only I was Adam, I would have never eaten that bad fruit”.
”No, Benny boy! You would have done the same” said grandfather. But Ben did not agree with that even after the dinner.
The next morning, as soon as Ben came out of his room, his grandfather gave him a black box with a lid tightly closed. Ben was very curious to know what was in the box. But his grandfather refused to tell him what it was. He said “Ben, I am going for a wedding today, you can go and play with the kids in the park. Can you take care of this little box till I come back?”, Ben was very excited as he quickly dreamt of the fun he is going to have with the kids in the park. “Yes Granpa, I’ll take care of your box too” he promised. “But Benny boy”, said grandfather in a stern and loving voice, “don’t open this box till I come back and also keep it very safe”. Ben’s curiosity rose “Ok, I’ll take care of it”. Grandfather left home leaving the confused little boy with the little black box.
Ben could not figure out what was in the box. His curiosity grew more and more as time went on. Seeing his friends in the park, he left the box under a bench and went to play. Every now and then he came to check the box- though he wanted to open and see what was there in the box, he went back to play.
Finally he took the box in his hands and told himself, “Just one peep and I will put it back”. Slowly he opened the box and out jumped a little mouse and ran into the bushes. Ben threw the box in a fright. Ben searched the mouse all over the park, but it was nowhere to be found. He was very scared and dreamt of all the bad things that’s gonna happen to him when grandpa returns. . What will he tell his grandfather?.
He started to cry, “I shouldn’t have opened it, I should have waited a little longer till granpa comes. He would have told me what was in it. O no! what will I tell him. He is going to be very upset with me . It must have been his favorite mouse!”.
Later that evening, grandpa came to the park in search of him. He found little Ben sitting under a tree holding black box. Grandpa was very happy to the see him and the box in his hand. As soon as Ben saw his grandpa, he burst into a loud cry. “I am sorry grandpa, I lost your little mouse”. “But how” asked grandpa. “I opened the box that you gave me” said Ben feeling very guilty.
“Come on Benny boy, lets go home and talk about this” said the old man and took Ben home. Then he explained it must have been the same that had happened with Adam and Eve. “Even if it were you, you would have done it, but let’s not blame them, Benny boy, Jesus has the solutions to what had happened because of Adam and Eve. He will forgive you if you ask Him and if you really mean it”.
“Yes granpa, I really feel sorry for what I did and what I said yesterday”. Yes Jesus will forgive your sins, and He is the only way to forgiveness”. “Grandpa can I ask Him for forgiveness now, I really feel guilty for disobeying you”, asked Ben.
Both knelt down and Ben prayed his first meaningful prayer “Jesus, thank you for coming down to the earth and for dying for me on the cross. I am sorry for being so bad and murmuring about the sins of Adam and Eve and I am really sorry for being disobedient to grandpa today. Please forgive me Jesus. Amen”.
Ben felt very light in his heart. “Grandpa, I feel Jesus has already forgiven me, but what is going to be my punishment for loosing your little mouse”. “More weeds tomorrow, Benny boy”, said grandpa with a big smile. “No problem, anything for you” said Ben with a whole heart.
