Short Stories
This Summer we acquired two tiny motherless kittens. We were only supposed to bring one home, but......this Mom has not yet perfected the art of saying No.
They are, without doubt, the most adorable little duo, purring loudly whenever picked up - with unconditional love.
'Midnight', of course, is black.
'Tipsy', a grey and white tabby, appears inebriated most of the time!
I should mention that my little family: Mom and two children, are 'crazy' about animals. We have a large potbellied pig, three goats, two sheep, two dogs, an endless supply of chickens.......and now three cats.
All of whom have names and personalities and are most definately not 'for the freezer'.
back to our story......
Two nights ago our tiny kittens vanished.
Every room, cupboard, drawer, bed, etc, was searched , and with increasing anxiety.
The only possible explanation seemed to be that they had somehow escaped and were now in the 'Great Outdoors'.
Where we live, there are Coyotes, Foxes, Racoons, Possums, and some very large snakes, all of whom are predators to small creatures.
It was already evening and so 'The Hunt was On.'
Armed with Mosquito Repellant and flashlights we walked the fields.
We walked, and walked, and walked some more.
No kittens to be found, but my childrens expressions kept us searching long after it became a waste of time.
Eventually we walked home, and ate a late and overbaked dinner.
As we sat around the table, all somewhat disinterested in food, I felt compelled to give the Mom reassurance speech:
about, 'finding our little guys tomorrow and for one night they could be safe.'
My twelve year old son saw right through me,"Mom, I'm getting older now, you don't have to sugar coat everything - I know about Nature."
My teenage daughter, 'Susan' announced, "thanks a lot bro," and stomped out of the room.
By now it was gone ten thirty and past time for bed. My son went off to brush his teeth, and I went outside to lock up our other animals and search one more time.
Still no sign of kittens, but the familiar cry of coyotes not too far off.
I came inside.
My son was in bed, and already sleeping. I kissed his brow and turned off his light.
Susan was not in her room.
Susan was not even in the house.
We had been butting heads all afternoon, I was also exhausted and not in the least impressed to find her gone. More to the point, Where was she?
......My daughter is, at this time, a very hormonal teenage rebel. Having said that, she is also a very beautiful young lady: both on the outside and in her heart. There is nothing that she would not do for another if she felt that there was a need. However 'lifes blows' have created in her 'One Tough Little Cookie,' and she works incredibly hard to maintain her non-emotional stance......
Eventually I found her outside, in the barn, kneeling on the dark and dirty floor, somewhat aggressively hammering wood.
I was about to say something to the effect:
'What on earth are you doing child, it's almost midnight.'
Then I heard her choked up voice.
"O.K. God, (hammer.) First my Dad, (more hammering.) then my Grandpa, then my dog. Do You really need my kittens too?
Enough already!"
Followed by a lot of heavy hammering.
Not wanting to find myself accidentally hammered in the dark, I stayed in the doorway and called her name.
She looked , dropped the hammer, stood up with open arms - and ran into mine.
"Oh Mom," and then cried ... and cried ... and cried.
I cried too.
I tucked her into bed that night, as if she were five.
Wishing, with all my heart, that I could undo some of the past pain in her precious childhood, and protect her from any more.
I stroked her hair until she fell asleep.
A little later, just before seeking my own rest, I looked in on her again.
There on her pillow, nestled in her hair were the missing balls of fluff.
Tipsy and Midnight were back.
I have no idea where they came from. The logical explanation would be that they had found a cozy 'nap-nook' in her room and had been there all along.
God only knows, but regardless of where or how, I am convinced that Jesus looked down on Susan, hammering in the barn, and surely agreed,
'Enough Already'.

God really does love us. We don't know why certain things happen but when we cry out, somehow, He turns things around. I'm teary-eyed right now.
WOW! I am a 49 year old man, and I was a little misty eyed! What a great story! All I can say is, "WOW!" God is so good!
Oh Elizabeth, that was beautiful! I'm a totally hopeless mess when it comes to puppies and kittens. This story made me cry, but I loved it so much.
