‘Inviting’ God Back To America: Opportunity – Elections 2008

By Joseph Jerry Umaru ( Joseph2Nations@yahoo.com )

These days, whenever I think about the upcoming United States general elections, especially the presidential elections, the Scriptural passage below flashes through my mind – it has been resonating in and on my mind:

“And it came to pass in those days, that He [Jesus] went out into a mountain to pray, and continued ALL NIGHT in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called unto Him His disciples: and of them He CHOSE twelve, whom also He named apostles.”
(Luke 6:12 -13 KJV)

The forthcoming US elections has seriously been on my mind even though I’m not an American and also don’t live in America .

The Lord has a kind of ‘implant’ such a special love and passion for the American nation and People in my heart ever since my teenage years. That love and passion has been ‘growing’ and increasing over the years. I have therefore, been following, monitoring and observing the political, social and spiritual developments in the United States with keen interest over the years.

An American friend of mine jokingly told me years back that; ‘I know more about America than some Americans’. Well, may be, may be not…

One thing I’m sure of though: This passion and love for America and Americans that the LORD has placed on/in my heart is for a purpose and for His glory. I long everyday for that purpose to be revealed more clearly to me.

I must also not forget to mention that the American Church (the Body of Christ in America ) and American preachers has played a vital role in my spiritual growth and ‘evolution’ over the years – They are still playing that role in my life and unfolding/evolving ministry.

Furthermore, America ’s political ‘system’ has also helped positively in shaping (to some degree), the political system and structures in my country. The presidential system of government operational in my country is ‘modeled’ after the American version. I think, I “owe” America a lot!

So, I am among those you may aptly describe as “Friends of America ”.

To this end, I want to dedicate this month’s article to the American nation and people even as they get set to elect a new President and members of Congress come November 2008.

I want this article to be a kind of a ‘wake-up’ call to Americans and fellow ‘Friends of America’ across the globe.

Some of the views I will be expressing in this article are what I had already expressed in an earlier article and also in past correspondences with some of my American friends. As apostle said: “To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous(burdensome) but for you it is [beneficial] (Philippians 3:1).

All the more, if I am repeating what I have said in the past I do so, I hope, with added content, and certainly with a deeper conviction.

As we have just read in our opening Scripture (Luke 6:12 -13 KJV); Jesus spent “ALL NIGHT” in prayer to God before choosing His 12 Apostles.

If our Lord Jesus Christ – God manifested in the flesh – could pray “all night’ before “electing” (choosing) His 12 apostles, I see no Scriptural basis why we should not pray “ALL MONTHS” leading to the November 2008 elections – before going to the polls to elect our new leaders. Let’s adopt Jesus’ model!

Take it or leave it, the character of those we vote into office will shape/determine the character of our nation. As Dr. Myles Munroe once wrote; “Our quality of life depends on the quality of our leaders”.

Elections 2008 presents Americans another opportunity to ‘invite’ God back to America . It presents America and Americans the opportunity to begin ANEW --- for our God is a God of NEW BEGINNINGS!

By divine design, this Election Year happens to have fallen in a year ending with the number 8 – A prophetic year.
The number 8 represents New Beginnings. Eighth note on the piano begins a NEW octave!

Let’s pray and believe God for a NEW political, spiritual, social and economic order in America beginning this 2008.
We should pray to God (as did Christ) and ask Him to take preeminence before, during and after the polls--- we must pray asking the Father to ‘ensure’ that only men and women that will uphold Godly standards are elected into office.

Let’s not be carried away by the buzz and frenzy of the campaigns. Let Believers go before the Father of the Heavenly light and ask Him for direction.

“The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord” (Proverbs 21:31 NIV).

And to that LORD we must direct our prayers…
As the fourth stanza of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ( America ’s National Anthem) reads: “And this be our motto, In God Is Our Trust...”

There is no doubting the fact that America has found herself in a spiritual, political, economic and social quagmire. But nothing is impossible for Jehovah El-Gibor whom we serve.

Ex-President Bill Clinton made a remarkable statement during his inauguration for his first term in office way back in 1992 that has stuck to my mind over the years. He said during his inauguration speech that year; “There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cure by what is right with America ”.
And to me, God Almighty, the God of America’s founding fathers, is the ONLY “thing” that is right with America, and only Him can ‘cure’ America. America must therefore be returned to her Divine-origin! America must return to the Ancient Paths of her Christian founding fathers.

Revival is urgently needed in America . And voting in Godly men and women into office will help fast-track that. America must be returned to her Divine origin. Let’s pray for revival in our land…for God’s protection and also for wisdom upon our elected and soon-to-be elected officials.

Americans should put behind them party, racial and denominational differences. When Terrorists struck on 9/11, they didn’t come looking for supporters of a particular political party or race, they came against America and Americans. Therefore, Americans must unite as AMERICANS for the good of their nation and that of generations of Americans yet unborn.

For those of us, friends of America living in other nations, we should all arise and stand in the gap for America in this critical period of her history even as she gets set to elect a new President and members of Congress.

America is contending with two evil Enemy forces: The Enemies within and The Enemies without.
Unfortunately, the enemies within are doing “more damage” to America morally and spiritually than the enemies without.
These enemies within, are eating into the very fabric of American life…like a destructive cancer, they are gradually eating up the ‘soul’ of America ( America ’s Godly foundation and Christian ethics). These evil forces within, are determined to root out GOD in American life and government, and they seems to be making head-way. WE MUST STOP THEM!

Groups such as the ACLU and the PLANNED PARENTHOOD must be confronted head-on using all legal and spiritual arsenals available to us as Believers.
These enemies within are intensifying their lobbying to legalized abortion, same-sex marriage and erase any trace of America ’s divine origin from public buildings. We must take our stance as the custodians of our nation’s Godly heritage.

It is not enough to fight the enemies without (Radical Islam and Terrorism), we must also confront these enemies within, otherwise, even if the war against terror is eventually won, these enemies within, will self-destroy America .

“Believers can no longer sit idly and let those who walk in darkness dictate the moral, economic and social climate of this country ( America ).”

As a Believer, you have a voice and it needs to be heard in the heavenly realms through your prayers. Let’s pray for the moral cleansing of the soul of America .

The value system in America is at its all-time low. We are in the evil days, and evil days are characterized by a reversal of good values. Evil is no longer seen as evil. Isaiah 5:20 says, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil.”

Dr. David Jeremiah of San Diego, California in his November 2006 ‘Turning Points Devotional’ wrote: “Our American society is increasingly accepting evil as good, and rejecting good as evil; and the Ten Commandments are pried from the walls of courthouses and public buildings across our nation. It’s easy to become alarmed at the moral deterioration of our times.”
Writing further, he said; “We should be alarmed, but earnest prayer is a more urgent priority. It’s in times like these that God sends His great revivals”

We must also add physical to the spiritual, by always coming out to vote during local, state and national elections. I have observed that; Church People don’t like participating in politics. They do not like to vote either – thus leaving the political arena to unbelievers and “non-active” Christians.

As David Barton, President of WallBuilders wrote years back; “Whenever the Godly depart from any arena, their Godly values depart with them. A person in office always legislates according to his personal beliefs and convictions… Christians through bad doctrines, political inactivity and apathy handed over the reins of the nation to leaders who awarded life-long appointments to justices eager to uproot Christian values that had been the heart of this nation for centuries. Quite frankly, the court’s religion-hostile decisions were merely an outgrowth of what the Christian community at large had permitted and encouraged in the decades preceding those rulings…”

Church people rarely go into politics and only a few does exercise their civic responsibility to vote. What they got to understand is that; their votes counts and matters a lot!

We saw an example of this in the year 2000 US presidential elections. It is on record that only an estimated 50 percent of born-again Americans voted. That’s quite sad, especially when you consider the fact that less than 600 ballots in the State of Florida determined the outcome of the entire election.

I agree with what a wise man once said; “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote”. Edmund Burke once remarked; “All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

The voting booth is where you can speak out about those things you believe. Dr. Creflo Dollar Jnr. once cautioned; “If you do not vote, you do not have a right to find fault with your government and the character of those holding office”.

John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States once said; “ Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers”. How powerful are words spoken with strong conviction!!

The kind of leaders John Jay was talking about are the kind of leaders who according to Dr. Creflo Dollar Jr; “won’t operate according to situational ethics. They won’t compromise godliness just to please others when the situation calls for it.”

Christians should therefore, arise…vote and also be voted for.

In voting, you should also vote wisely and by the Spirit’s leading. The fact that it has been your family tradition to vote for a particular political party does not justify your casting your vote for that party. The Lord told me way back in 2006 that; “The challenge of protecting and moving America forward is above any political party…” God alone has the ultimate solution to America ’s ills, and to Him we must turn to and inquire which direction the pendulum of our votes should swing.

Dr. Creflo Dollar Jr. once admonished; “Don’t get caught up in voting strictly along party lines. It is not about being Democrat, Independent or Republican. Instead, do your homework. Research each candidate to determine if God is on his or her platform. For instance, what position does the candidate take regarding issues such as abortion, homosexuality and Israel ? Ultimately, your vote should be for the person who is most qualified for the job and whose beliefs are in line with the Word of God…once you have completed your research, [pray to God and ask Him for confirmation and direction]”.

Samuel Adams famously said: “Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is… executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country”.

As the presidential and Congressional elections approaches, let’s go before the Father of the Heavenly light for direction.

David Meyer (Joyce Meyer’s husband) said all: “First, we need to PRAY and ask God to motivate us as well as all Christians in America to get out and vote for Godly men and women. We also need to ask Him to reveal the true character of each candidate, exposing all the masks and the misinterpretations of the ungodly presented by the media. At the same time, we can ask God to allow every Godly candidate to shine forth as stars in the midst of the darkness, and that they will be protected, promoted, and provided with His divine favor…that all our elected officials, as well as ALL Americans, will rediscover the truth of God’s Word and that this nation was founded on Biblical principles. Just as Josiah and the nation of Judah found the Holy Scriptures and turned back to God (see 2Kings 22, 23). Ask the Lord to draw America back to Him and our original roots wholeheartedly…”

Let’s all continue to pray for America . I believe America will play a KEY role in God’s end-time prophetic agenda. Hence, even though I am not an American, I deemed it necessary to keep America and Americans in my prayers. My prayer is for America to return to her divine origin.

God has shown America and Americans great favor over the years mainly because America is a country founded on Biblical principles. She had a Godly foundation, and as you are all aware, foundation is ‘everything’, be it in house building or nation building.

Dr. David Jeremiah puts it succinctly; “ America ’s greatness is due to the deep convictions of her founders, including the Pilgrims who landed on her shores for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.”

To let hideous and monstrous groups such as the ACLU destroy the Biblical and moral umbilical cord (fiber) of America will be dangerous for the future of America and the rest of the free world.

Let’s take America back for God, from the West Coast to the East Coast.

America is today a nation under “many gods”, far from ONE NATION UNDER GOD which her founding fathers envisioned her to be. She must be prayerfully returned to what her Christian founding fathers originally intended for her to be.

Dr. Creflo Dollar Jnr. once affirmed; “There was a time when the Body of Christ influenced the profile of governments–especially in the United States . America ’s founding fathers were predominantly men of God who understood the importance of governing their country based on Biblical principles. From Samuel Adams to Thomas Jefferson, many of them were very vocal when establishing ‘one nation under God’.”

But, anti-Christian elements in the US will have none of that observation. These demonically ‘empowered’ groups must be stop by the power of prayer and collective resolve on the part of the people of God. There is no doubt that, the Bible was the “center of gravity” of the American constitution as originally drafted by the founding fathers of America .

Dr. Creflo Dollar writing on page 11 of the February 2004 issue of ‘Changing Your World Magazine’, made this firm assertion; “It is clear that the founding fathers were impacted by religion. The motto, ‘In God We Trust’ was placed on all paper currency by an Act of congress in 1955 and was chosen as our motto by an Act of Congress in 1956. We can even go a step further and cross-reference the Bible with the set up of the federal government. Isaiah 33:22 says; ‘For the Lord is our JUDGE, the Lord is our LAWGIVER; the Lord is our KING…’ The founding fathers took the Scriptures and made three branches in our government: JUDICIAL, LEGISLATIVE and EXECUTIVE.”

But, I make bold to say; this same Bible has been partially or completely thrown into the trash can of America ’s political and social life.

Across the world and especially in America , the secular world has been ‘successful’ in misinterpreting the separation of Church from State to mean separation of God from Government. How sad, how very sad.

Dr. David Jeremiah once wrote; “It is hard NOT to connect America ’s declining moral and spiritual state with the removal of the BIBLE from its original central place in America ’s government and schools.” I couldn’t agree more!

The Church of God in America must wake up to her divine responsibility. The incredible number of powerless dead Churches in our lands today is a testimony to the success of Satan’s carefully planned tactics to destroy the nations that has made a stance for Christ. America is one of the prime targets of this Enemy strategy.

The solution to America ’s ills lies with the Church and not with world out-there, and that’s why we need to pray for revival in the US and across the nations. Let all that call upon the Name of the Lord arise and take their nations for Jesus. God says in 2nd Chronicles 7:14 that; “If My people which are called by name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and will heal their land”.

The solution to our nations problems does not lie with the world out there, but with the people of God, and that’s why God says, “if My people”.

Tommy Tenney, in his book; “Trust & Tragedy” wrote: “Society at large does not have access to the key to revival. Rather, it is hidden within the pockets of the Christian family. He [God] entrusted heaven’s keys of freedom and wholeness to us, and He gave us the right words to bring healing as well as powerful declarations to set the captives free. Since the keys to freedom, healing, and wholeness for the land are in our possession through Christ, the real question isn’t, When will God do something about all this? Right questions produce right answers. The right question is: When will we do something about it?.”

The Church got to be awoken from her slumber if the glory of America is to be preserved. Abraham Lincoln’s immortal statement puts this truth into focus: “The truth announced in the Holy Scripture, and proven by all history [is] that; ‘those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord’.”

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” [Psalm 33:12]

In the early 1830s, the famous French philosopher, Alexis de Tocqueville wrote; “Not until I went into the Churches in America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.”

Today, the story has changed. Many pulpits are no longer aflame with righteousness; instead, they are offering “ear tickling sermons and diluted doctrines dealing mainly with personal success and prosperity…” (See 2nd Timothy 4:3 NAS).”
Many pulpits are no longer producing flames, but smokes…becoming a “nuisance” to the very society it should be transforming. Where is the Azusa spirit?

A Christian friend of mine, Janet Austin, who is an American living in New Mexico, USA, expressed her deep concern over the pathetic spiritual state of America in an email she sent me way back in 2006. In that email, she said, and I quote; “ I FEEL SOMETIMES THE MISSIONS FIELDS ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE MORE CONSECRATED AND SERIOUS ABOUT A RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR LOVING FATHER THAN AMERICA IS.”

Yet, in the midst of all this, THERE IS HOPE. As David Meyer rightly said; “There is a rising number of Americans who are hungry for the truth and a genuine relationship with the God of America’s founding fathers. Thankfully, not only is our God faithful, but He’s also merciful – He always stands ready and willing to answer the sincere cries of His people. We as the people of God should arise and be the agents of change, revival and restoration in our lands. We are ‘the salt of earth’.”

We also need to pray for God’s protection upon America from the Enemies without: Radical Islam and Terrorism.

Brother Kenneth Copeland writing in the June 2002 issue of ‘Believer’s Voice of Victory magazine’, made this mind-boggling observation: “In Old Testament times, many of the Enemies of God’s people were the ‘ITEs’ – Amorites, Amalekites, Moabites and so on. In recent days, it has been the ‘ISMs’ that have tried to oppress and dominate the lives of God’s people. We have seen Nazism and communism. Now, another ‘ism’ has raised itself up – terrorism. It’s the most recent force of the enemy and, if given the opportunity, Satan would use terrorism to dominate mankind through oppression”

Terrorism and Radical Islam are not just a threat to the United States alone; they are also, to the entire free world. We here in Nigeria are not free from it either.
We as the Soldiers of Christ should take our stance against these hideous enemies. And God willing, we shall!

As I end this article, let me once again encourage Americans to vote in the forthcoming November elections and also do that by the leading of the Spirit, and not based on party, racial or denominational lines. Let’s vote for a better, Godly and prosperous America . A better America is a catalyst for a better world.

Let’s pray for America . Let’s respond enthusiastically to the words/request of President George W. Bush during the National Day of Prayer Proclamation on April 26, 2002 , during which he charged Americans thus: “…I ask Americans to pray for God’s protection, to express gratitude for our blessings and to seek moral and spiritual renewal …”

In keeping with 1Timothy 2:1, let’s continue to pray for our political, religious, economic and social leaders (both those in office at the moment and those about to be voted in) that the Spirit of the LORD will rule over them and influence their decisions for our lands. God is well able to order and re-order their steps, thinking, and policies. The Bible says in Proverbs 21:1 that; “The king’s heart is in the Hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turns it wherever He pleases.”

Let’s all hearken to the admonition of Dr. Creflo Dollar as given in one of his magazine articles: “During these last days, I sense an urgency for the Body of Christ to intercede for our leaders and for the return of righteousness to this nation. These are critical times in the earth, and it is our responsibility to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s Voice and pray for those in authority. Through the authority we have been given in the Name of Jesus, His shed blood and the Word of God, we can affect long-lasting, positive changes in the world. God has ordained His people to be the controlling influence in global affairs through the vehicle of prayer. When you obey His mandate to pray, you open a channel by which He can bless you and your nation.”

May the Lord pour upon us all, the Spirit of intercession, supplication and thanksgiving.

US Elections 2008:
May God take preeminence… May the pendulum of the elections swing towards righteousness– righteousness that will exalt America ... May Godly President and Vice be elected into office…May Godly men and women be elected into Congress…May America continue to dwell in the Secret Place of the Most High…

We must also not forget to pray for the protection of Israel and for the peace of Jerusalem . Noble causes and organizations such as ‘Christians United For Israel ’ (WWW.CUFI.ORG) founded and led by Pastor John Hagee, should be given the necessary moral, spiritual, political and financial support.

Let me end this ‘Election Year Article’ with the words/prayer of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the D-Day Prayer on June 6, 1944: “[GOD], with Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy … lead us to the saving of our country ... Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen.”
