God Will Take Care of You

God Will Take Care of You

Ten years ago I was the resident pianist at a small Methodist Church in Cherokee, Alabama. I loved the church very much. I drove 20 minutes one way to get there and night services caused me to drive home in the dark. I can’t see real well at night.

One Sunday evening while the Pastor was preaching one of the members, who was a Rescue Squad First Responder, got an emergency call. He stepped out of the sanctuary to take the call. In a moment he returned and told the Pastor there was a weather emergency.

A tornado warning had been issued for Cherokee. A tornado had been spotted on the ground coming straight for us. He said, “If any of you want to leave you have about 15 minutes to make it home. Otherwise, you need to stay here.”

There were about 50 people in service that night and half of them practically ran to their cars. The other half just sat there. The preacher said, “You know? I feel safer right here in the Lord’s house. Angela, could you play, God Will Take Care of You?”

I looked up the number and we sang each verse. As we sang we could hear the wind roaring above us. The thunder and lightning was violently crashing around us. The stained glass windows were lit up with each lightning strike. We continued to sing.

After we sang thru it one time, we sang it again as the storm passed.

On the last verse the second time, the Rescue Squad called again and said, “Yall are safe now, but don’t head west when you leave. The tornado touched down one mile from the church and there are trees and debris everywhere. It lifted up over the church and touched down again east of the church. Some homes were damaged but the road is clear.”

We were all silent for what seemed to be minutes. Then some began crying in praise. Mostly, none of us knew what else to do but to praise God. We spontaneously broke into singing, “We are standing on Holy Ground and we know that there are angels all around............”

I shall never forget this experience. God wouldn’t let me if I tried to. But I never want to.

If I had left when everyone else did I would have been caught in the middle of that tornado, on the highway, alone. I would have been in its direct path. Remembering it now makes me go into raptures of Praise.

Every time I hear that song I think of the night the Lord did take care of us. He showed us directly His faithfulness to keep His promises of protection.

The words to the song are as follows in case you do not know it:

God Will Take Care of You
By Civilla D. Martin 1869-1948

Verse 1
Be not dismayed what e’er be tide
God will take care of you.
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God Will Take Care of You.

Verse 2
Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God Will Take Care of You
When dangers fierce your path assail
God Will Take Care of You.

Verse 3
All you may need He will provide
God Will Take Care of you
Nothing you ask will be denied
God Will Take Care of You.

Verse 4
No matter what may be the test
God Will Take Care of You
Lean, weary one, upon His breast
God Will Take Care of You.

God will take care of you. Through every day, o’er all the way
He will take care of you. God will take care of you.

***Last Sunday night as my goddaughter and I left home for Sunday night services, thunderstorms were looming. Dark clouds filled the sky. I could tell she was afraid. So, I told her the story about the night God did take care of me.

When we arrived at church, and walked into the sanctuary the organist had started the prelude. He was playing, “God Will Take Care of You”.

I think this was God’s way of telling Caitlyn that He would take care of us again. I said, “Caitlyn, do you know what he is playing, it is the song, God Will Take Care of You.”

She said, with bright eyes and a nine year old heart of hope, “WOW that is awesome!”

She was right—it was awesome!!

Praise Him
