A mule caravan wound along the mountain trail. It was guarded by several British Special Operations Executive troopers and a few auxileries from various groups. Lord Wilberford, Asher, and David walked beside them.
Out of the brush jumped several savage looking armed men.
Lord Wilberford said, "We have kept our bargain. Have you kept yours Avner?"
The leader of the men said, "Cartridges, grenades and plastique for a German enginner Colonel. We have him here and are glad to be rid of him.
A miserable looking man was brought forward.
Avner said,"Were sorry he is not very healthy. But we don't have enough food for ourselves."
Asher said, "He does not seem to have merely undergone poor nourishment."
Avner replied, "Well, you know how it is. You didn't say what condition he should be turned over to you-and we needed his knowlege too. Got to give him credit-it took a bit of work."
"Very Well", said Lord Wilberford. Then he turned to the German "Come sir, I think we can find you some more comfortable facilities in a few days."
Asher said, "You don't have to stay here. You can come with us to Palestine and make a new land safe from the Huns."
Avner said, "It's a kind offer. But you have your war and we have ours. Maybe after the Huns are defeated."
They separated.
Asher said,"I don't know what to think of him."
Lord Wilberford said, "He is like so many partisan leaders. Very brave but most inelegant."
