Extending Jesus’ Ministry
If we were to look at the first chapter of Joshua we would easily see that Joshua’s ministry was an extension of Moses’ ministry. In many places in the New Testament we can see that we, the Church, the Body of Christ is an extension of Jesus’ ministry. Every person in the body of Christ is an extension of Jesus’ ministry. “ After these things the Lord Jesus appointed other seventy {other than the 12 disciples} and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place, where He Himself would come.” Here we see that Jesus sends a group of His followers ahead of Himself. They were an extension of His ministry. They are not called Apostles, they are disciples, People who follow Jesus with discipline.

There are times when the eleven Apostles represented the whole body of Christ. We find this instance in the gospel of Matthew where Jesus tells them to: “Go you therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them. Jesus could not expect eleven men to go into all nation and evangelize the whole world until He returns to earth. The eleven represented the entire body of Christ. Jesus has given every member in His body a part to play in reaching the lost, or that one that has not given his life to Christ. You have a part, I have a part. “ For as we have many members in one body {of Christ}, and all members have not the same office, so we being many, are one body in Christ. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us.” You have a gift or a talent, I have a gift or a talent to be used in the body of Christ for the purpose of extending Jesus’ ministry on earth.

Your gift may represent a foot, my gift may represent a hand. “ If the foot shall say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the body: is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, because I am not the eye, I am not of the body: is it therefore not of the body? But God has set the members every one of them in the body as it has pleased Him. Now you are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” None of us has the privilege of choosing what role we will play in the body of Christ. God has set the members in the body, after all, it was God that gave out the gifts and talents. He knows us better than we know ourselves, He knows our capabilities. If you don’t know your place in the Body of Christ, you need to ask God.

“And Jesus gave some, Apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelist, and some pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” Jesus placed these gifted people in the body for the purpose of equipping the members of the body for ministry, and to build up one another.
These gifted people are set in the body to help you with your gifts and talents. In addition to these gifted men, Jesus has promised: “ The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name. He shall teach you all things, and bring to remembrance whatsoever I have said to you.” Jesus goes on to say: “ He, the Spirit of truth, when He comes, He will guide you into all truth.” Jesus has given us His Spirit to help us to be an extensions of His ministry. Through you Jesus can minister on your job. Through you Jesus is in the Mall, He is at the gas pump, He is in all the world ministering to people that does not know the saving grace that is found by calling on His name. What are you doing with the work that has been entrusted to you?
