How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!"
Psalm 119:103
Holy Spirit, teach us from your book, and give us insight and understanding, In Jesus name
So many things of this world compete for our attention. There is so much of this world that is sweet and tantalizing. Some of those things are bad and others are not, however, anything that we put above God becomes an idol. David told the Lord that His words were sweeter than honey. I think that in biblical times, honey was one of the sweetest things one could eat(it was in the days before refined and powdered sugar!).
So often, we long for a sweetness, for a comfort food, something physical to satisfy our longing and to fill our empty hearts. God's word is the daily bread we need and it provides us spiritual nourishment and satisfaction. Physical food cures temporary hunger, but the consistent reading of the word of God satisfies our souls and spirits in ways that no cookie, candy or spoonful of honey can.
This is just some insight, but I wonder if the reason God created lovely things such as chocolate, honey, and also flowers, sunsets, and other beautiful things that please the senses is because He wants to illustrate that as great as these things are, He far surpasses them all!
David understood. He knew that despite the earthly treasures that God has bestowed upon us, the spiritual things that He shares with us are far greater, and satisfy us in a much deeper way. Psalm 119, verse 127 says that he loves Gods commands more than "pure gold".......Gods word and His ways are of higher value than any earthly treasure and those who seek them shall be rich in a way that no earthy posession can make them! Heavenly knowledge, In God's eyes is the most valued form of wealth.
