(Turn angry face up to air conditioning vent.)

[SILENCE.]
"LORD!

Come DOWN!
PLEASE?"
"I'm right Here, child."
"WELL?
WELL!
We better have a TALK!
Right NOW!
And, NO!
I'm NOT GONNA CALM DOWN!"
[IRRITATING SILENCE.]
"Come ON, Lord!
I wanna KNOW!"
[OMINOUS PAUSE.]
[SOME RUMBLING
OFF IN THE DISTANCE.]
"Who AM I, child?"
"The One Who
doesn't LIKE PORCUPINES?"
[PATIENT SIGH.]
"Read My Word, child."
"And, what about the BILLY GOATS?
What'd Ya have against THEM?"
"Read, child."
"Yeah!
It's right HERE, Lord.
Let's see.....wait a minute;
I gotta get my cat off of
the Big Bible.
(Scruffing sounds.)
(A couple meows.)
(Rootbeer bottle falls
off table.)
(More meows.)
Here it is, LORD:
Night and day
it shall not be quenched
its smoke shall go up
forever.....
But the hawk and
porcupine
shall possess it..........
Thorns shall grow over
its stronghold...
it shall be the haunt
of jackals....
the satyr shall cry
to its fellow....
[Isaiah 34:10-14]
What's wrong with PORCUPINES,
LORD? I think they're really
CUTE!"
[PATIENT NOD.]
"Who made them, child?"
"I dunno."
"Who."
"Now You sound like
an owl, Lord. Hey,
it's right HERE!
In Your WORD:
There shall the owl
nest and lay
and hatch

WELL? You even
talk about the OWLS!"
[LAUGH!]

talking against the billy GOATS?
What's WRONG with 'em,

"I made them, child."

But, You also made all those
BAD people in the WORLD!
What about THEM?
Yeah, and THEY get
to go to HEAVEN?
And, our cats
and dogs DON'T?
(Point up at air conditioning vent.)
HEY, MY CAT'S GOT
MORE SOUL THAN
ANYBODY I KNOW!
MORE SOUL IN THE
TEENY TINY CLAW
OF HER BACK PAW!"
[SMILE.]
"Who is your Lord,
child?"
(Yell up at air vent.)
"YOU ARE!"
[NOD.]
"Read My Word,
beloved."
"Ya mean, THIS one, again?
For My thoughts
are not
your thoughts;
Neither
are
your ways,
My ways,
says the Lord.
[Isaiah 55:8]
YEAH, but Y'ur ALWAYS
tellin' me to read that
Part, LORD!"
[NOD.]
"Yes, little one.
But;
[PAUSE.]
you have yet to learn It."
