As parents we care what company our children keep. We want the best for them and we constantly guide and warn them when we see them go astray due to unhealthy relationships. We are more than happy to see them part company with the wrong friends. I have been in such situations severally and I have given counsel, prayed, fasted and sent prayer requests just to see my children released from friendships I consider unhealthy. But one thing our children must do is to make choices and extend the gift of goodbye to those friends.
Do not be deceived, bad company ruins good morals. 1corinthians 15:33 ( RSV)
God is our loving Father. If we earthly parents care about what company our children keep and we go through all the above to see them delivered, our relationships must matter more to God.
How much more does God care about us keeping wrong relations?. Even once correct relations have a life span. Wisdom is to discern when to say goodbye.
Some years ago, I parted with one of my best friends. Our friendship dated back to high school and we remained close for over twenty years. One time everything changed. The Holy Spirit had cautioned me on a particular decision I was supposed to make which my friend would have influenced. Since I felt her motive and concern was right, I chose to go along with her despite the nudging of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes the flesh can deceive us to doubt the voice of God especially if what we are about to do is not a sin. But it later leads to sin.
The moment I agreed with my friend, I could not find peace and wanted to do what the Lord had impressed on me and she was not willing to understand. I had to tear myself tearfully from that relationship and move on to where God was calling me. We both went through unecessary pain and regrets and our long friendship was broken. I still honor and respect our years as friends and think of her highly and it hurts me that we are no longer sharing. But when I look back and see what the Lord has done in my life since, not even the friendship could accomplish.
I went through a time of pain and condemnation as a result of the break up. I asked God to reconcile us and still hoped that it would be done. One day after no success, the Holy Spirit gave me the scripture on Lot's wife who turned to a pilllar of salt when she looked back to see what she had left behind after the angel warned them not to. I released it to the Lord and received healing. Genesis 19:26 ( RSV)
God places a high value on friendship for He created us for fellowship with others too but He is quick to remove friends that would stunt our growth or hinder us to move in to our divine purposes. We need to be ready and willing to extend the gift of goodbye to those in our lives whose friendship has outlived its time. Then only will God take us to the next level and them too.
