Second Fiddle Saints
Life’s orchestra is filled with Spotlight Characters and Second Fiddles. Interlaced within the fabric of accomplishments, achievements, and successes of the Spotlight Characters are the Lesser-Knowns, or the Second Fiddles, without whose influence, sacrifice, love, expertise and input the Spotlight Characters might not be.
One Biblical Lesser-Known is Andrew. When Jesus selected the twelve disciples, Andrew was the first chosen for that honor. Scripture tells us that Andrew was an apostle and Simon Peter’s brother. He traveled with John to hear the message of John the Baptist who presented to them Jesus, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29, NIV Bible) Andrew talked with Jesus. He saw Jesus baptized. He saw Jesus performed miracles. He pledged himself to become a follower of Jesus.
Andrew was not the aggressive leader of men that his brother, Simon Peter, was. He was not an eloquent preacher, and he did not possess the abilities, or the qualities, necessary for helping to establish new church in the name of God. Next to Simon Peter, Andrew was a Second Fiddle. BUT, Andrew had “fallen in love” with Jesus – and life was never the same for him again. The first thing Andrew did after he found Jesus was to find his brother Simon Peter and introduce him to Jesus! Had Andrew not brought Simon Peter to Jesus, there would have been no outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. There would have been no spreading of Christianity from that point in time.
When Jesus was ready to select his twelve apostles, he was drawn to Andrew - not because he knew Andrew would do great things, but because Andrew was so typical of the countless numbers of ordinary people who were willing to labor behind the scenes to assure the success of great leaders and great movements. Andrew was willing to serve. He was willing to lose his identity for the sake of Christ and others. He was the epitome of Christianity’s paradox: “Whosoever finds his life will lose it, and whosoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10;29, NIV Bible)
Today, there are Andrews everywhere. Among them are ordinary people who patiently serve with little recognition or appreciation. All are dedicated to the ministry of others. They are the school teachers, the store clerks, the truck drivers, the garbage collectors, the factory workers, the office workers, the fathers, the mothers, the grandparents . . . and the list goes one and on. . . These are the Andrews who do the work long after the Spotlight Characters have faded from view.
The survival of our nation and God’s Church depends upon the Andrews who are willing to play Second Fiddle in Life’s Orchestra. Only Second Fiddle? Yes. But Second Fiddle surrendered to God! When we have moved past this Earth into Heaven’s Orchestra, we will see that, unlike Earth’s Orchestra, many of the First Chairs have been filled by Second Fiddle Saints.
