HOPE
There have been times in my life when I have lost hope. I’m not sure exactly when or where it actually happened but like a coin trickling out through a hole in my pocket so it seems my hope trickled out through a hole in my heart.
Like a ship in distress I watched my dreams being dashed upon the rocks as wave after wave would lift them high in the air only to send them crashing against the hard and jagged edges of futility until the hull gave way.
Seldom is it one major catastrophe that steals your hope, it’s the thousand little foxes in the garden that relentlessly keep nipping at our dreams until there is nothing left. The lost job, the misunderstanding, the unanswered prayers, the stress of keeping our heads above water all take their toll until we have lost focus of the shore and are pulled out to sea by a current of apathy and self pity.
The bible tells us that” hope differed can make our hearts sick”. Therefore the antidote would seem to be if hope is rekindled then our hearts can once again beat with the joy and passion they once possessed. It would seem to me that it would be much more beneficial if we learn to focus on what is going right and less on our disappointments.
I used to be so concerned that if I failed I would miss the bus until I discovered that there is a bus every day. So what if we missed a couple busses and got off at the wrong stops. There will always be another bus, a new direction, a new opportunity, a chance to meet new friends and the possibility of a new and better tomorrow.
I would suggest that we spend a lot less time trying to understand why some things did not work out and begin to refocus our attention on today. We must learn to live in the present moment. The regrets of the past and the fear of what the future might hold will only steal our joy and cause us untold distress.
It is time to shake off the dust of the past disappointments and dream again. As you open up your mind and heart and begin being grateful for all the things that have and are going right you will begin to sense a new surge of optimism rising up within you. Let optimism be the ointment that strengthens your heart and fills it once again with hope.
