Goodness is the Sixth fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Greek word is agathosune {ag-ath-o-soo'-nay} this word is perhaps the most difficult to define, for it is so general in nature. Goodness in man is not a mere passive quality, but the deliberate preference of right to wrong, the firm and persistent resistance of all moral evil, and the choosing and following of all moral good.
Goodness is the part of God’s nature and His goodness teaches sinners the way of salvation and eternal life through His Son Christ Jesus. The goodness of God helps us to keep his commandments, magnify him and revere him. God’s goodness is revealed to us in this that, “ He did not kept back His Son from us, He sacrificed him for the forgiveness of our sins and to bless us with eternal life.” God’s goodness is not only for His chosen ones rather His goodness is for every one. His goodness does not come to us because we are righteous or we are special to him rather his goodness is revealed for his entire creation- For Bible says, “ He makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike and gives rain to those who do good and evil.” It is his goodness that sustains, provides, protects and takes care of His entire creation.
The goodness of God is great because it does not change because of men’s failure but it’s based upon God’s own word and his promise. God’s goodness is rich and abundant in nature and it’s satisfying, enduring and universal. Goodness of God leads us to repentance, forgiving sins of the other’s, In providing for the widows, orphans and poor, In supplying temporal wants of others, loving our enemies, praying for those who persecutes us, blessing those who curses us, leaving in peace with everyone, preserving unity, in showing generosity, tolerance and restraint from harming others, in sacrificing one’s own self-centered motives and desires, denying self and ready to sacrifice one’s own life for the sake of Gospel.
If we have goodness of God as the fruit of the Spirit then we shall never be quick to become hasty, furious, self-centered, egoistic, angry, jealous, prideful, hateful, lying, sadistic, un-forgiving, worrying, short-sighted and immature in Christian faith rather the fruit of goodness will motivate us to become considerate, meek, enduring, contended, joyful, temperate, persevering and rich in munificence with an ultimate goal to glorify, magnify and exalt the name of our Lord & Saviour Christ Jesus.
The fruit of the Spirit: Goodness will urge others to confide in God’s goodness just as Psalmist experienced the goodness of God Almighty and said, “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him”.
May God bless us with His goodness so that His love and compassion can work through us and become a living testimony for others who are still away from the saving grace of the Lord Almighty.
Psalms 86:5 -For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
