Story #3

Grace

Megan stared at the stain, horrified.

Green as grass.

Mrs. Smoot looked as if she smelled something worse than grass.

“The cabinets are hideous. You can load them right back on the truck. I’m not accepting and I’m not paying.”

“I can’t understand it,” Megan whispered to the driver. “The sample was a perfect match: number ninety-nine, Cherry Wood.”

Mike grinned. “These are number sixty-six, Lime Cooler. The stack in the back is ninety-nine.”

Story #4

Long Way, Baby

Megan stared at the stain, horrified. Mrs. Wright, the sixth-grade teacher, looked away.

“Run on home, girlie. Your mother will take care of you.” Megan walked to her grandparents' house.

When he came home, Grandfather Elijah found her sitting atop the fence, face streaked with dirty tears.

“What’s wrong with my girl?”

Megan could tell Grandfather anything: and so she did.

“You’re not dying, baby girl, you’re just growing up.”

The year was 1925.

EXCELLENT, Janice! That first one just killed me--I remember vividly some hideous shades of green in houses where I lived over the years. And the 2nd one was so poignant and tender. Very well done.

Oh, "stain" as in WOOD stain. Very cleaver. Who would have thought? These are great! Bravo.
Tim Pickl 26 Mar 2008
The first one has me laughing! We had a house filled with everything green -- it took us several years to get it all replaced. The second one is very moving.
Janice Cartwright 26 Mar 2008
The second is based on a true story. My mother's mother told her nothing about biological changes in her body and she thought she was dying. Her grandfather comforted her when he explained what had happened was natural and that she was just growing to be a young lady.

But Green is my favorite color! :0) And the second one, I had to help a younger girl in school who had this same problem. Honestly, I think a lot of young girls think they're dying. Great job on both stories!

Both fantastic! That second one was beautifully said--you set a whole mood and everything in so few words!
