“Maybe we should take the high chair outside and hose it down.” I laughed. It was my son’s first birthday. The grocery store had generously included a child-size cake with our family-sized cake order. After a rousing “Happy Birthday” song, we helped him blow out his little candle and then his tiny hands gleefully squished into the cake and brought globs of cake to his mouth. We helped him unwrap his gifts, and of course he was more interested in the boxes and bright wrapping paper than his toys that afternoon! It was a joyful day and we celebrated the first of many childhood birthdays with this gift from God that we were blessed with.
As I look back to my own childhood birthdays, I wonder how I allowed the busyness of life to hinder my celebrations of my special day. I fondly remember the chocolate bundt cakes my mom would make, the party games with little prizes on a serving tray for us to pick from when we won, and being surrounded by my friends. While I’m sure the gifts were important at the time, I only remember the fun and the friends on those special days.
Don’t let your age hinder your “celebrations of life” for you or your friends! I encourage you to make your friend’s birthday celebration special too; a phone call, a card, or surprise her with a cheesecake! Take the time to celebrate the beautiful gift of life and make your friend smile as you help make her day extra special too! The Lord blessed us with this gift of life; and each birthday should be a special day of celebration as we remember the blessings over the past year, and look forward to the Lord's love and blessings in the coming year too.
