When I was about five my grandfather raised fruit. His peaches were trophies. One day I had this kindergarten hunch that if I could crack open up a peach seed to see how it worked I would then be able to corner the market on my favorite fruit and secure an endless supply. So, with hammer in hand I set out on my mission to discover the mystery of the seed.
Year’s later I was informed that my intentions were indeed good but what I really needed was an electron microscope instead of a hammer. Then I would be able to see that inside every seed is another seed, or DNA that is capable of duplicating an infinite number of the very same seeds.
Since that time I have discovered several principles, or mandates that govern seed. I am going to cover four in this article.
The first two are found in Gen.1:11 where God guarantees two things if seed is planted properly:
“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth’ and it was so.“
1. the seed will yield “according to its kind” and,
2. the “seed is in itself” to reproduce ad infinitum
One guarantees quality. Two guarantees perpetual quantity.
Just think for a minute about the vast quantity and quality of vegetation we see every day that all started out as one small seed. Things like grasses, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Isn't it amazing that this kind of reproduction happens everyday without us giving it much thought? Yet most of us would agree that every time this process occurs it demonstrates a supernatural power because every seed obeys His word with great purpose and destiny. You will appreciate this more when you read the following story.
Several years ago I read that when one of the Pharaoh's tombs was excavated a few seeds were discovered sealed up in a jar. Some of the researchers decided to plant some of these 4,000 year-old seeds. Much to their amazement they germinated and reproduced plants that were indigenous to the plants of their time period. How could this happen? God installed his ‘instructions’ in every seed so it would yield according to its own kind - with 'another seed' in it.
3. Galatians 6:7 declares a third mandate concerning our seed. This is the Law of Sowing and Reaping. It not only confirms what God says in Gen. 1:11 but adds another factor by including ‘all seed’ - not just botanical or agricultural seed.
(a)"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows,(b)that and that only is what he will reap.” (part a: KJB; part b: Amplified Bible).
How do I know all seed is included? Verse 7 states, “'whatever' a man sows”. In other words 'anything' qualifies as seed as long as it is ‘treated like seed’ and ‘sown as seed'. Consequently this would mean that all of the following are seeds: God’s word, love, patience, acts of kindness, time, money, grace, peach seeds, forgiveness, cars, clothes, etc.
God is basically telling us that if we sow apple seeds we will reap apples or if we sow money in good soil we will reap money, and eternal rewards. There is no difference in whether it is money seeds, peach seeds or 4,000 year old mummy seeds. It does not make any difference because there is a seed within itself and it is simply obeying God‘s laws.
As stewards in the Kingdom of God, I believe He wants us to treat the money that He has entrusted to us like seed. When we do we will witness the same kinds of results we see when we plant physical seed. We seem to have a firm understanding that money functions as seed in the world’s economic system when it comes to investing so why is it that so many fail to understand this when it comes to sowing money as seed into God‘s Kingdom?
One of the reasons might be that when we invest dollars into an financial investment program we can watch it as it is multiplied into more dollars but when we sow our financial seed into a fertile ministry it is not as easy to calculate the harvest initially. We are tempted to count the number of souls giving their lives to the Lord but this method will not be completely accurate since coming to Christ is a process for many people and their conversion may take some time. We must be careful to give God the glory for our harvest for it is He who gives the increase (I Corinthians 3:6). When He gets involved, our sowing takes on a spiritual aspect and the reaping is measured as “true riches” (Luke16:11).
4.Time is the fourth principle governing seed. Galatians 6:9 guarantees a harvest time from seed sown if we do not grow weary and give up. Ecclesiastes 3:2 states that there is an appointed time and purpose for every seed sown and harvested. Jesus explains this in the Parable of the Growing Seed..."as soon as the grain is ripened the reaper takes the harvest" (Mk 4:26-29). God says in Genesis 8:22 that as long as the earth remains there will be a seedtime and harvest. In other words, as long as we have time left on this planet seed-time-harvest will prevail.
With all of these powerful scripture verses it should be very clear to us that the reason God designed “seed to be in itself” is so we would be guaranteed of a harvest. Why? So there can be more seed for sowing. It is a 'perpetual process' as long as we observe and obey God’s word concerning the laws of sowing and reaping. There must be a harvest so there can be more seed. It clearly follows that we should 'expect a harvest' from the seed we sow.
You have heard it said that it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6). How do you prove your faith? Expectation. It is the only proof of your faith in God’s word concerning your harvest or anything else you are seeking from God. Ask any farmer and they will tell you that their biggest hope is in the harvest. That’s what I call expectation. When you sow seed into His Kingdom expecting it to produce a harvest it proves that you have faith in His word.
Here are a few questions that I find challenging in this area. Hopefully they will challenge you too.
Are you sowing the seed God has entrusted to you?
What are you expecting / believing God’s word for in this area?
What kinds of harvest are you needing or expecting?
What do you plan with the next round of seeds when you receive your next harvest?
“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth’ and it was so." Gen.1:11
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption but he who sows to the spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Galatians 6:7-9
“To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted.” Ecclesiastes 3:1,2
"The Kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come." Mark 4:26-29
“While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And winter and summer, And day and night, Shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” I Corinthians 3:6
“Therefore, if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon who will commit to trust the true riches?” Luke 16:11
"For God, who gives seed to the farmer to plant, and later on, good crops to harvest and eat, will give you more and more seed to plant and will make it grow so that you can give away more and more fruit from your harvest. Yes, God will give you much so that you can give away much...." 2 Cor.9:10-11
