Megan stared at the stain, horrified. A splash of dark blue marred the center of Janet’s heirloom tablecloth. Megan had borrowed the cloth for a lady’s luncheon at church to demonstrate the theme, Knit Together In Love.”

Megan looked up, dismayed. Janet smiled, no, grinned, then started laughing. “April fools, Megan! I switched cloths at church.”

Megan stared at her friend, stunned. “You brat! You’re lucky we’re so well knit together, or….” She laughed, relieved.

#2
Megan stared at the stain, horrified. Little hands blotted with red marker held the hanky out to her. “It always makes you sad, Mommy, so I drawed a flower on it so it’ll make you happy.”

Megan hugged Ella close, “Thanks sweetie. Grandma would like that. Now I will think of both of you when I see it. I’ll be happy even if I cry, OK? I love you Ella.”

“I love you too, Mommy.”

Thankfully, noone has attempted to make me fall for an April fool's joke in a long time, though I remember, when I was a child, my dad calling me to the window to see an elephant. That was one loving, quick-thinking mommy.

Ah yes, it is almost the first of April. A day to be mischievious is coming upon us. You've got me thinking. The second story is so full of mommy love. The world needs lots of that!

These are very good...excellent writing! I felt the horror in the first one. That was a a mean April's Fools joke. I really liked the second. Very sweet.

a poignant pair of stories! Awesome.

Oh, my! This is why I hate April Fool's Day! It's that few seconds of horror before the joke is revealed, which you captured expertly here. The second one? Awwwwww.
Lyn Churchyard 21 Mar 2008
Oh I'm with Jan about April Fool jokes. Especially this sort. :o The second story was just so sweet. Definitely an "Awwww" factor there. Good stuff!!
