CULT OF DEATH
By freelance writer Lupie Riley 3/11/08
It was a quiet afternoon of shopping and errands when Wen and I decided on a late lunch at the local fast foods. Seated across from us within listening distance was a young boy who appeared to be about 11 years of age. He was totally immersed in his role play with an action figure. Fifteen minutes later I had heard the word 'kill' no less then 10 times. His mother appeared indifferent to this dialog indicating to me it was a common practice in the home.
I thought of another similar incident with my grandson of the same age with his first video game. A call to lunch brought an anguished reply of 'I can't stop now or I might die'. Is it any wonder why we have an epidemic in our society of ADHD children on tranquilizer drugs. Since my first observation I've also studied the adults with these games. They play for hours oblivious to anyone around them. No communication between their spouse, children or physical exercise. The question is would this precious time be better spent interacting with their children, strengthening their relationship with their spouses, keeping their bodies in good physical condition and actually accomplishing something beneficial. The answer is yes.
Are they unwaring participant in the 'Cult of Death'. An addiction that draws them into a world of explosions, dismemberment, blood, death and dying. Webster Dictionary defines the word cult as "an obsessive and faddish devotion to a principle or persons. A group of persons sharing such devotion: sect.” With the addictive behavior of the participants what kind of world will we be living in five years from now? Our youth of today will be creating the future movies, games, music and entertainment. Will the theme be centered around death?
What will it be like to live in a society that has been saturated with this theme. A society that has replaced parenting with these artificial babysitters of games, movies and television. A people that has conditioned their youth to taking drugs at a very early age because of the lack of good parenting skills. A people that has failed to teach their children consequences to their actions, set boundaries and instill morals and absolutes. A great Nation that has been desensitized to the shedding of blood, violence and death. Will this Nation’s people ring their hands in despair as their children grow into adulthood and enter into a world filled with violence and death. When tragedy does occur the media and experts seldom emphasis the influence these artificial babysitters have had on the conscious mind of our youth. Advertiser’s use this technique of repetition to create a sense of discontentment in order to convince the consumer the only way to be happy is investing in their product. After constant repetition the thought is finally implanted in the subconscious and acted upon when we buy their product. This is what happens to our youth by the constant repetition of games, movies and television. The artificial babysitters eventually accomplish their goal--the destruction of a solid moral foundation and the de-valuing of life. They begin to act out that which has been imbedded in their subconscious over a period of time. The fruits of which are seen in the outbreak of STD in 1 out of 4 teens from the age of 13 on up, a rebellious and self-absorbed attitude and the killing of innocent people and themselves. Thanks to the years of influence from Hollywood and movies, media, books, television and games. They buy into the ‘Cult of Death.’
Having been born in the 40's Wen and I have the opportunity to look back on 60 years of history and changes. Today’s youth do not have that advantage. They are the science and technology children born into the age of computers, videogames, I pods and all the tech gadgets that were already in place. The age of 'I want it now' and 'if it feels good do it' A time when discipline, boundaries, absolutes and morality are considered outdated and Victorian. They are taught that they are in charge of their own destiny with power to create their own reality. What kind of reality will that be? We see hints of it now but will it be a downhill slide into a dark time in history?
The bible speaks of a time like this as we near the end of this age. A pre-flood time when violence was on the rise and the world was rotten to the core. God saw that mankind was vicious and depraved and the earth was filled with crime--then the flood came. Timothy speaks of a time near the end when mankind will be proud and boastful sneering at God and those who try to be good. They will be hardheaded, lovers of themselves and money, liars, troublemakers and immoral, preferring good times to worshiping God, IITim. chapt. 3. Is this comparable to our present condition in the world ? Are we heading into an age of enlightment or a time of darkness and death such as the world has never seen or will see again.
Little by little over a period of years society has been conditioned by repetition to choose the wide road that leads to death. May God help America come back to it's senses and return to its Christian foundation. The more we elliminate God from our lives and country that umbrella of peace and safety will be lifted and America's people will suffer the consequences. The question we should ask ourselves is whether we will be a part of the masses that choose the wide road or will we travel the straight and narrow that leads to life, liberty and peace. Peace with God and mankind. God help us if we buy into the 'Cult of Death.'
