Last Words Of Jesus Christ
Luke 23:34 Father forgive them; for they know not what they do.
Jesus came to earth for two reasons. First He came to redeem humanity by paying the price for their sins. Next He came to present and show humanity what God is like. Here we have the perfect example of our forgiving God and Father. Despite His pain and agony Jesus asks the Father to forgive His persecutors.
Luke 23:43 Virily I say unto you. Today shall you be with me in paradise.
The Son of Man, Jesus Christ, came to seek and to save that which was lost.
God never turns away anyone that asks for salvation. Whether you are in the White House or a thief on the cross, God’s grace is found in Jesus Christ.
John 19:25-27 Woman, behold your son! Behold your mother!
This is a perfect picture of our affectionate God. Jesus knows the trials that His mother Mary will face, so He affectionately assigns the disciple John to care for her. He also knows the great hardship that John will have to endure as an apostle, so He affectionately assigns His mother Mary to be a comfort and a listening hear for John.
Matthew 27:46 E’li, E’li, la ‘ma sa bac-tha ‘ni? My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
We read in 2 Corinthians 5:21 “ For God has made Him, Jesus Christ, to be sin { when He was on the cross} for us, He knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God through Him“. When Jesus hung on the cross, God placed the sins of humanity on Him. But we are told in Habakkuk 1:13 “ You are of pure eyes {God} too look on sin.“. Because our God is Pure a Holy, He does not look on sin.{ every Christian is covered in the blood of Jesus} At this point on the cross as Jesus takes on the sins of the world, for the first time He is separated from His Father.
John 19:28 I thirst.
This verse reveals to us Jesus in His humanity. The bible calls Him, The Last Adam. We are told in Romans 5:14 “ Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the likeness of Adam’s transgressions who {Adam} is the figure, pattern, of Him {Jesus} that was to come“. When God created Adam, He created him to look like the Messiah, the Christ, who was to come. Adam sinned at a time when he was a sinless son of God, so the redeemer had to be {1} sinless,{2} a son of God, {3} human. Jesus was as much man as he was God. As much God as He was Man.
John 19:30 It is finished.
The work of redemption is complete. We are told in Galatians 3:13 “ Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us.” Jesus has paid the price for humanity’s sin. We are bought with a price {the blood of Jesus} therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Cor. 6:20
Father into Your hands I commit {the keeping of } My spirit.
Jesus lived a life committed to His Father. Jesus speaking to the Pharisees said; “The Father has not left Me alone, For I do always those things that please Him.” Now at the end of His mission, the price for humanity’s sin paid, He makes a final commitment, this time His spirit. We read in John 10:18 “No man takes My life from Me, but I lay it down of Myself, I have the power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again.”
Jesus leaves this earth in triumphant victory, mission accomplished.
