For flimsy reasons, a man picked a quarrel with his wife and as if that wasn’t enough, he began assaulting her. The woman, realising the violence her husband vented on her, got out of the house and was running from him. The man, blinded with rage was hot on her heels.
The lady suddenly noticed a hole that was large enough to take in a foot. She wasn’t sure if her husband would see it. She stopped running and pointed out the dangerous hole to her husband. She knew that it might trap and hurt him, probably breaking his leg. She instructed him to be careful. She only started running again after she was sure the enraged husband had seen the hole. She risked being caught not to mention the fact that she was the one who was being offended. She didn’t do this so that the husband might stop molesting her—she wasn’t bribing him. She loved him and didn’t want him to get hurt. Now, what about that for a love that cares; a love not deserved yet offered; a love not circumstantial; a love that stands the test?
Genuine love, believe me—whether it is for an enemy or for a betraying spouse, relative, brethren or a friend—never fails. Why? The apostle Paul gives an epitome of what genuine love looks like:
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
—1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NKJV, italics, my emphasis).
