A Gift of Joy

Recently, I was entering Piggly Wiggly #79 in Greenwood, South Carolina, when I saw a man talking with a little girl around 10 years of age and a lady who looked like she might be the little girl’s grandmother…He had a stuffed animal (bear) in his arms and was chatting with the two…I went about what I was doing and purchased what I needed…As I started out of the store, the man, the little girl, and the woman proceeded to walk out as I did…My car was parked beside the man’s vehicle…I saw the man open the back of his car and exchange the bear for another stuffed animal (Tigger)…He gave the little girl the Tigger, and she walked away smiling with her grandmother…As I passed by, the man asked me if I would like to have the bear, and I smiled and said yes I would…He gave me the bear, and I offered him some poems that I carry with me…He was very gracious and accepted the poems…He was such a light and generous soul…I was blessed to meet him and to receive this gift of joy…

I took my new toy home and since it had on a vest with a pocket on the front, I placed a small angel pin in its pocket…The bear now has a prominent place in my bedroom, and it reminds me daily that there are people in life who share warmth and kindness when you least expect it, and they do so just because they have generosity and kindness in their hearts…I was and am richly blessed by this small act of simple generosity…I named the bear McBee in honor of this kind man who thought enough to share with me…He had explained to me that this is a common practice of his to share toys, and I realized that he and I have a lot in common in that I sprinkle my poems everywhere I go because this is my way of giving the gift of joy…

I did not know until after this beautiful interplay that James W. Parris, Jr., the Store Operator, saw the entire event... At a later date,I had called James about something unrelated; and during the conversation, he told me that he had seen all that occurred when I mentioned how this event had touched my heart...He knew M. McBee and the goodness of his soul and generosity...He too saw me...You see, you never know who is watching...Since that time, I have taken a copy of the story and poem which I have posted on my site which you now are reading to James, the Store Operator, and I have given a copy to M. McBee...What a blessing to my soul this interaction has brought to me...It is wonderful to meet people like James too who manages this Piggly Wiggly location with such insight, compassion, understanding, and commitment to people...

Too, there was another person who saw all that transpired that day, and it was a Ward Secretary by the name of Cathy Boyter, who works with me...She had mentioned to me at work that she saw me getting the "teddy bear" from this man at Piggly Wiggly...I just smiled...

The truth is that from this one wonderful man, M. McBee, not only was my life touched but also the lives of others as well through his generosity...What if we all lived our lives this way as a real "Friend" who spreads love everywhere with everyone just because our hearts are full and we want to make others lives better and to bring joy to others...M. McBee lives his life with "full pockets" of love...Oh! to be so blessed and even more so to be such a blessing...

A Toy From A Friend

Here is a toy from a friend

That will bring a smile

To each new day you see --

Here is a toy from a friend

And that friend is me…

May it bring you joy

When your day may be blue --

May it make you smile

When you feel alone

Or when you may not know

Exactly what to do…

May it be a reminder

That this friend truly does care

And help you remember

That each tomorrow this friend

Will remember you in prayer…

A toy from a friend

Is priceless indeed

For it fills a space

With God’s love

Where He sees the need…
