....but, to this day
the Lord has not given
you a mind to
understand,
or eyes to see,
or ears to hear.
[Deuteronomy 29:4]
******************************
"I was sorta lost, last night,
Lord."
"Where, child?"
"Huh? Oh, You're talking
to me? I thought You'd be
with all the nice people,
and their Valentines, tonight,
Lord."
"I am here, child."
"Yeah, but I'm just a schlabunkle,
Lord: not much to write home,
about."
"Who are you writing to now,
My child?"
"Eh.......I'm not sure, Lord."
[SILENCE]
"So, where were you lost,
last night, My beloved?"
"Eh, oh......in Isaiah class.
One minute everybody
was saying that You were
talking about the Coming
of Jesus [Isaiah 7:14]."
[NOD.]
"Go on."
"And the next,
they were saying that
this part was also about
Isaiah's 2 kids: the ones
with the weird long, names,
Lord."
[NOD.]
"I felt like a dodo bird, Lord."
[CHUCKLE!]
"I wish You had made me
a lot smarter.
(pause)
(look up at the heating vent)
It really would have helped."
"I understand, My precious."
"Don't worry about it, Lord.
It's too late, now. So....why
didn't You publish a Cliff Notes,
too? Ya know; to go along Your
heavy poetry, and riddles?"
"I want you to seek Me, child."
"Oh......I guess, You didn't
want to make it too easy
for us, huh?"
"It is a mystery, child."
"Yeah, Lord.
So is my I.Q.!"
[SMILE.]
"Not to Me, child."
(doubtful look up at
the air vent)
"Hm......yeah; I guess so.
Hey, Lord? Everybody liked the
part where You 'whistled'!.
[NOD.]
Read It, child:
In that day
the Lord will whistle
for the fly.....
and for the bee....
[Isaiah 7:18]"
"What's it about, child?"
"Eh, THIS part?
Eh......somethin about Israel
gettin the tar beat out of 'em,
again?"
[PATIENT NOD.]
"I mean, Lord, I could
probably say that about,
maybe, 2/3 of Your Book....
and, I'd be about RIGHT!"
[SAD FROWN.]
"Why are you sad, tonight,
child?"
"I didn't say I was SAD!
Anyway.....WHO wants ta'
KNOW?"
"I do, child."
"Hmph. WHY?"
"Because, I love you."
(silence)
[SILENCE.]
"I guess.
(thoughtful silence)
Like I've said
before, Lord;
You sure have a strange
way of showin it."
[PATIENT SILENCE.]
"Don't worry about it.
It's no big deal."
[PATIENT SILENCE.]
"I'm just a stupid, little,
ugly Jewish kid from northwest Philly.
I'm surprised You even
find the time to talk to me,
Lord."
[INFINTELY PATIENT SILENCE.]
"I mean, what with all the
important things You gotta
do, and all the important people
You gotta see."
"Tell Me who is important,
My precious one?"
(shrug)
(glance away from air vent)
"I dunno."
"Tell Me."
(shrug)
(look down at a dust bunny
under the printer)
"Tell Me, little one."
(tear slides down cheek)
"I'dunno, Lord."
"Go to sleep now, child."
(nod)
(shrug)
"And, Your Beloved
will watch over you."
"I don't have a beloved, Lord."
"Oh, My child!
You do.
Oh, you do."

Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth
I call to Thee,
when my heart is faint.
