A young couple was looking for a white under the counter coffee maker to match their kitchen decor, but all they could find where black models. Jokingly I told them that “black is the new white,” and wished them well in their search.
Lake Superior State University has released their annual List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use, and General Uselessness. The expression “ (Blank) is the new (Blank)” is on the list. Unfortunately, we can not banish concepts quite as easily as we banish trite expressions. If God was into trite expressions Isaiah might have written, “Woe to you who call evil the new good, and call darkness the new light.”
As Christians, we are called to see things as black and white, in a world where everything seems to be various shades of gray. The New Testament is full of admonishments and encouragement for believers to be on their guard against the spirit of Anti-Christ, and those who want to pervert truth and justice. More than just banning Mis-Use and Over-Use words, we need to ban those things that keep us from experiencing the true peace and joy we have in Christ Jesus.

Red is the New White
Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool
