AND GOD SAID, "LET THE WATER UNDER THE SKY BE GATHERED TO ONE PLACE, AND LET DRY GROUND APPEAR." AND IT WAS SO. GOD CALLED THE DRY GROUND "LAND," AND THE GATHERED WATERS HE CALLED "SEAS," AND GOD SAW THAT IT WAS GOOD.(NIV)
The time had finally come for the forces that raise portions of Earth's crust and lower others brought land above the waters to stay and dry out.
The verse refers to the gathering of surface water "to one place."
Psalm 33:7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storhouses. (NIV)
The Genesis wording suggests that the continental land began as a conglomerate, one mass in one locale, with the ocean surronding it. Later the land mass divided and split apart into the land that we see today.
Psalm 104:1-9 (NIV):
1 Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty.
2 He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent
3 and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind.
4 He makes winds his messengers,[1] flames of fire his servants.
5 He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.
6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains.
7 But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight;
8 they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them.
9 You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.
Scientists have said that theoretically, the current ratio of 29% land surface to 71% water surface to be the perfect balance to provide the maximum possible diversity of life!
This creation is so complex and so fine tuned ONLY A LOVING, ALL POWERFUL GOD could have DESIGNED IT! It is so percise, that natural processes alone could not have brought this world into existence and give us the environment to sustain life!
Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
The earth started with water covering the entire planet. God then let dry ground appear and later separated the continents. This separates the races of people which as we shall see in the next few chapters, was God's purpose for mankind. They were to spread out over the face of the earth.
However, in the future according to Revelation 21:1, there will be no more division because of the waters. The people will finally be "one" under God's leadership and guidance. There will be no more sea.

A wonderful explanation. Praise God for the way He proves Himself even in His creation!
