God is with us during the storms of our lives
By Chaplain Dan Langerock
The story is told of a person in the middle of a blizzard looking for shelter. As he looked around, he finally found the refuge he was seeking, but also found something else had located it before he had. A bird had nestled in a hollow in the rock where it could weather out the storm.
Have you ever been caught out doing your errands when a downpour came, promising to drench you? Did you happen to think or pray, “I wish God would stop this rain until I get my errands done?” Then, to your amazement, He did stop it until you get home, perhaps.
Maybe you are walking somewhere and the rain comes down really hard. Then someone stops and offers you a ride, and you are so grateful to be out of the wet weather. God knew you needed a ride and He sent it to help you in your circumstance.
Your car broke down in an inconvenient or dangerous area, and suddenly there is help for you in whatever form. God sent the help you needed at the appropriate time and you were rescued.
This is also true in the things we go through in life: unemployment, grief, divorce, separation from loved ones and many more. Even when God does not spectacularly rescue us or fix the problem we are encountering, He is still watching over us and teaching us.
The key to finding help from Him is our trust in His power to help us when difficulties come. Everyone has them, but we have a choice when they do to either trust Him for the answers or venture on our own. If we expect answers, we must be ready to do what He shows us.
Are there items in our life that need correction before the answer can come? What is my attitude toward the people and situation I am encountering? Just as you prepare the soil for your garden each year, answers need preparation as well so we will be able to receive them to our maximum benefit.
If you take that much care for your garden to make sure it will grow properly, isn’t your life so much more important to remove the obstacles that will prevent the answer from taking root?
What type of “soil” does your life possess, one of nurturing and love or an environment of bitterness and hate. Call on His Name for help in your storms, then be open to the answers He will give you. His peace does not depend on the absence of storms, but upon your trust in His power regardless of the circumstances.
