Rolf looked out the observation window and saw one rope by the bow and one by the stern as it pulled the giant airship toward the mooring mast. He could see that the giant airship was still pretty high off the ground. He was still looking out the observation window and did not see chief steward Willy approach.
" We are just about on the ground" he said with a smile." Thank you for everything you did for me". He hugged Rolf and then walked away. At that moment, he heard a slight popping noise that came from the back of the Hindenburg. He looked out the window to see workers down below running away in all directions.
Just then, an explosion ripped through the top of the airship and threw both Rolf and Willy onto the B deck catwalk. The giant airship began to tip onto it's stern and quickly became a ball of flame. Both men held unto the B deck stairrail and got onto their knees to avoid the flames. Rolf spotted some burnt bed linens, made two ropes for himself and Willy and then broke out two of the observation windows. With flames all around them and the ropes secured to what was left of the Hindenburg, the two men lowered themselves to the ground. As firemen and Navy personnel threw blankets over them, Rolf and Willy watched the remains of the beautiful airship fall in a ball of flame into the ground.
Both men praised God for protecting them and both stayed life long friends after that.
