“The Story of the Welcoming Smile”
Walmart -- Liberty Highway, Anderson, South Carolina
Recently, I was in Walmart in Anderson, South Carolina…I was in the Electronic’s Department where I paying at the register…As I was checking out, I offered my business-card to a young lady, Becky, at the register…When I handed her my card, she said to me that two years ago I gave her my card up front in this store when I was checking out at the register…I said to her that I wrote another book, and I would like for her to have another card…She took my card and smiled…
During our conversation and exchange, a lovely lady walked up; but I was not paying close attention until Becky, the clerk, said that this is the lady I need to meet…This lady’s name is Sandra Rice, the Store Manager…She was dressed in the usual attire of Walmart, so I had no way of knowing what her role was until Becky told me…I then noticed her badge which clearly displayed her title…She had the smile of an angel and impeccable manners…She had an open warmth about her, and she was very kind…
As we talked, Sandra asked me if I would like to come and have a book-signing in the store…I had mentioned to her that I had had two book-signings in Walmart in Greenwood, South Carolina, at the kind consideration of Randy Worthy, the Store Manager of the Greenwood location…She happened to know Randy, and so we had common ground…
From this exchange came a book-signing; and through this book-signing, I was enormously blessed by a community who knew relatively very little if anything of my existence or writing…I was there on December 20, 2007; and I was grandly blessed to have this wonderful opportunity…Not only that, I was tremendously blessed to have seen Becky again and to meet Sandra, who was the one who authorized this opportunity to promote what I love so much…
I too was blessed during the signing by having the help of Chuck, the Co-manager, who made certain that all my needs were met; I was blessed to meet and have the assistance of an employee Mary Earle, who was also gracious enough to purchase my book; Marlo, an employee; Elijah, a store security officer; and Alisha, an employee who I met when I arrived…How blessed I was that my reception by the staff and the public was wonderful, my location in the store could not have been better thanks to Chuck…All my needs were met so that I could be accessible to the public and be able to share what I love through my books...I was tremendously blessed to have this opportunity...
It was through the introduction of Becky to Sandra that this came to pass...The day of the signing was Sandra's day off, but she called to check on me I was told...It was such a kindness of Sandra's to invite me to the store for a signing and to make certain that everything was in order for me this day, even on her day off...I was richly blessed through this event...
"What is in a smile often is more than we could ever imagine"...
It is amazing to me how God works, and truly all I have to do is be prepared, show up, and be me…Mighty are the wonders of God…May it be that I always see what He alone is doing and stay on the path He places before me…
My personal thanks to Sandra, Becky, Chuck, the other employees of the store, and the community of Anderson, South Carolina... I too am and will be eternally grateful to God for His loving presence and direction...
"Often the joy we come to know comes through the welcoming smile"…
