Rock bottom
January 9, 2008

Rock bottom is a statement quite often referred to when someone is fighting in a battle against drugs and or alcohol. This is a place or state in which most professionals, family, and friends feel the person needs to reach before they can receive any substantial help.

I’ve been pondering this for a few days now after recently hearing this phrase in a conversation. From personal experience, hitting rock bottom has been life changing for me. Perhaps the situations leading up to rock bottom are not the loveliest to endure but once at that destination many old habits and negative thought patterns die while new life, God’s grace, and fresh hope are found. Rock bottom is where every soul needs to live on a daily basis and in every situation. As a soul and as a human we are in constant battle spiritually, mentally, and physically. None of us are immune to weakness.

God is our rock and our foundation where all truth, love, and life come from. Once at the bottom, the only thing left to do is to look up. When we look up, God lifts us up, dusts us off, hugs us, kisses us, and asks us if we’re all right. He will give us exactly what we need through his truth and in prayer.

Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (New Living Translation)

Meet God at rock bottom today, even now. He won’t let you down.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
My God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
And my place of safety.
He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.
I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.
2 Samuel 22: 3-4 ( New Living Translation)

So this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
"See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who trusts will never be dismayed.
Isaiah 28:16 (New International Version)
