Faith and a Mustard Seed by: Hannah McClure

Faith as big as a mustard seed. There's something kind of intriguing about that verse.Heres a little lesson I want to teach you that I learned today.

I was sitting outside looking at the trees swaying around in the wind. My eye caught on the tree that had been stuck on a branch from a hurricane one year. There it stood creaking and bent over.
It was a pretty big tree. About one years old. While I was watching it struggling to free itself in that branch, I remembered this verse.

Matthew 17:19-20 For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."Luke 17:5-6 "The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith!' The Lord replied. 'If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.'"

As I was thinking on this verse, I thought. "Hah! I could tell this branch to break and then the tree would be free! I know I have lots of faith in God and in the tree, that it would do it. Yeah, it would be weird if it worked but wouldn't it be cool if I knew I really had faith? So, I sat up a little taller and said, "Move branch! Move." It did nothing. I felt kind of stupid yelling at the branch. But then I tried again. "In Jesus name break branch so that the tree will be free!" Still nothing. I tried 7 more times and it still stood unstuck. By then I was starting to feel angry. Didnt God say if you have faith you can move mountains? So why wont the stupid branch move? Then I heard a soft and sudden voice. " Hannah, my child. Why are you struggling? Do you not know that what I meant was symbolic? You don't really think you can move that branch, do you? You cant. Its just impossible." "But how come? How come the old prophets could do it and I can't? How come they were able to do more stuff then we, in our decade, can? There used to be miracles. Healing of dead, etc. Why not move a simple branch? I just want to test my faith, and I know I do have it. Why Lord?"
And his answer was, "Because you are still small. You have not yet started out into your future. You are still a little child. Plus, thats exactly what it is. Your testing your strength which is not what you're sopposed to do. That means your testing God. Your thinking of having power. Of seeing the branch break. What I meant by a faith as small as a mustard seed moving mountains, I meant your faith is a big deal. It can move obstacles in your life. Even something that seems as big as a mountain."
So then I knew, it was symbolic. It doesnt mean that we can actually move mountains, although God may make us do weird things sometimes. Like one time God protected a missionary with an angel who prevented some other gang from hurting them. And Ingrid Bergman, a english missionary dared herself into a prison where chinese men were running mad, and it reeked of blood. She stopped them and was not killed. It was through faith that she believed she could do that.
So, I'm not saying your ever going to try to get a mountain to move anytime, but know that Gods power is great enough to do anything.

In Matthew 7:7 it says Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you.

We have to have faith and believe for great things to happen.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

We may not be able to see whats in front of us or how to get around something. Its faith that gets us to believe. If we can picture our faith moving mountains, its a pretty strong picture. Thats what Jesus meant about a mustard seed moving mountains.

Matthew 19:26 But Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible."

We need to have faith in the impossible. With whatevers happening in your life. Whatever's making you feel a certain way. Gloomy, sad. Whatever. You need to have faith that God will solve it. We may not have the power to do certain things, like I wasnt able to move that branch. But with him anthing's possible, and he could have just as well broken it. God is more powerful than us. And that is the faith to believe in. "Trust and believe, for theres no other way, to be happy in Jesus, then to trust and obey."

Have faith. For that is what makes us believe. We need him.
