And the angel
said to them,
Be not afraid;
for behold,
I bring you good news
of a great joy......
[Luke 2:10]
*************************
"Lord?"

"Yes, child?"

"You know, I was just
reading about all the
depression everybody
has on Your Holiday."

[NOD.]

"Maybe, it would just've
been better, if You had
never shown up.......'Ya know?"

"Do you mean that, child?"

"Hey, Lord, don't look at ME!
I'm JEWISH! I didn't
start any of this
depression-at-Christmas-stuff!"

[SMILE.]

"Seriously, Lord,
do YOU know why
everybody gets so depressed,
this time of year?"

"Yes, child.
I do."

"Why, Lord:
'cuz, they don't have enough money?
..........they have too much money,
and don't know how to spend it?
they got bills, and no job to speak of?
they are alone, and they
didn't used to be?
they're sick?
they're sick 'a life,
and just wanna' end it?
What do 'Ya THINK?"

[PATIENT NOD.]
"Because, My child....."

"I bet You get depressed, too.
I mean, there's war,
and famine, and disease,
and great sadness...."

[INFINITELY PATIENT NOD.]
"Listen to Me, child."

"and, bad TV shows...
remember those cute
shows from the '60's,
Lord? Do You remember
'The Courtship of Eddy's Father'?
How 'bout those Doris Day movies?
How come we can't have
stuff like that, anymore?"

"Listen to Me,
My precious."

"And, then there's the MUSIC: ECH!
Do You remember the Herman's Hermits,
Lord? Weren't they CUTE?
Remember that song about
'I'm Henry the Eighth, I am!'?
That was so cute."

"Are you LISTENING, child?"

"Yeah, Lord. You know
I ALWAYS listen!"

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"Okay, Lord. I'm sorry.
I'm gonna' listen;
I promise."

"You know the reason, My beloved."

"WHAT?"

"Tell Me."

"Well......probably, Lord...."

"Yes?"

"'Cuz, they're not focusing
on the only important thing."

"And what is that, child?"

"You."

[NOD.]
*****************************
...In that region there were shepherds
out in the field, keeping watch
over their flock by night.
And an angel of the Lord
appeared to them,
and the glory of the Lord
shone around them,
and they were filled with fear.
And the angel said to them,
Be not afraid,
for behold,
I bring you good news of a great joy.....
for to you is born this day
in the city of David,
a Savior,
Who is Christ the Lord.
[Luke 2:8-11]
