Can a human being really know God? Can you really be acquainted with the Creator of the universe the way you are with another human being? I think the answer to these questions is an unqualified ‘yes’! In fact, the very fact that God created humans is proof enough that He can be known in such a manner. I believe He created us because He wanted to be able to relate with beings unlike His mighty angels. He wanted beings who would be intimate with Him and with whom He could ‘hang out’. God’s desire to be known is at the very root of our existence and therefore I think intimacy with God is not only possible but was the normal scheme of things before that sad event we now refer to as ‘the fall’. And what a fall it was: from intimacy with God to estrangement from Him, from confidence in His presence to shrinking back at the sound of His footsteps. Thank God that this was not the end of the story though, He still sought a way to make it possible for humans to know Him. Starting with His friend Abraham He gradually unfolded events in history until the One who came to be known as ‘The Way, The Truth and The Life’ came on the scene! And what an entrance it was, if you doubt me just ask the shepherds who saw and heard all those angels that cold night out in the plains of first century Palestine! When He became a full grown man He said He had come so that we might ‘have life and have it to the full’ but have you ever wondered what He actually meant by that? I think He meant that He had come so we could have the life of intimacy and friendship with God which He created us for in the first place, with all its attendant benefits.
We’ve established that God can be known and that He wants to be known. The big question however is ‘how can I know Him for myself’? Well, for starters you need to be introduced to Him and only one Person can do that- The Way. No wonder He said ‘no one comes to The Father except through me’. We call this becoming born- again, getting saved, giving your life to the Lord, accepting Jesus as personal Lord and Saviour, whichever you prefer. The important thing is that you come to Jesus and ask Him to be your Saviour and Lord asking Him to come into your heart. As essential and beautiful as this event is, it’s only the beginning. Remember you’ve only just been introduced to the Father; you’ve only just become His child. Now the fun part begins, and that’s getting to know God, your new Father. At this point let me state something very clearly: God is infinite and I don’t think we’ll ever be done getting to know Him. I think we’ll be forever learning new things about this amazing God. That’s the wonderful thing about it, it’s an unending love story, the only truly ‘happy ever after’ tale.
Like every other relationship, the more time you spend talking and doing things together, the more you get to know each other. I think I learned this the hard way, always desiring to know God more but not giving Him time, not staying alone with Him enough. Now I know that there is no substitute for ‘chilling’ with Him if you’re serious about knowing Him more. And guess what? The more you know Him, the more you’ll love Him! He’s just amazing; words can’t adequately describe the depth and magnitude of who He is. The little I know of Him is so great to me that I wonder what will happen as I continue to learn more of Him each day. I love this God! If you don’t already know Him, I invite you to know this God (He’s the only true one actually), I invite you to begin this unending adventure of discovery and intimacy unlike anything you’ve ever known or imagined possible. Like Paul I want you to say from your heart ‘I want to know Him’! No matter where you stand right now, you can begin this wonderful journey. Just take the first step and keep moving. Trust me; you’ll wonder how you could’ve ever lived without knowing this God. I’ve still got a long way to go myself but hey, this is for ever and ever, and I’m looking forward to every moment of it.
