Woe is me!
For the Lord
has added sorrow
to my pain;
I am weary with
my groaning,
and
I find no rest.
[Jeremiah 45:3]
***********************
"Lord."
"Yes, My beloved."
"They are here, again."
"Who, My child?"
"My ghosts;
they're back."
"What ghosts are
these, child."
"YOU know, Lord!
How can You be so, so....."
"Cold, and distant?"
"Yes, Lord.
You took the words
right out 'a my mouth!"
[SMILE.]
"I know you, My beloved."
"Yeah, but You're not DOIN'
anything, about it!"
"Shh. Be quiet, child."
(stunned silence)
[SILENCE]
(impatient silence)
"Remember that story,
Lord, when I was a kid;
the one about the mean boss,
who got visited by that
ghost with all the chains?"
[NOD.]
"Well, that's ME, Lord!
That's ME! And, You're
not doin' anything, at ALL!"
"Is that really you, My child?"
"Well....no; I mean, I'm not a
grouchy ole' guy who lives
back in the 1700's, and has
an accounting business....."
"Go on."
"Huh? Well, I'm certainly
not miserly, and I don't
employ any young, skinny guy
with a tall hat and long
side burns."
[NOD.]
"And, I'd never keep my
shop cold; it'd be so warm
in there, the young skinny
guy would be taking off
his top hat, and wiping
his long side burns."
[LAUGH.]
"Plus, I hate accounting.
Why would I have an
accounting shop, in the
FIRST place?
(silence)
Neah; it doesn't make
any sense."
"But, you do have something
in common with the man
in the story, My child."
"WHAT are 'Ya talkin' about, Lord?
I'm not MEAN, or MISERLY,
OR like accounting!
What would I ever have
in common with HIM?"
"Pride."
"PRIDE? I don't
UNDERSTAND?"
"Yes, you do."
"Neah! I DON'T, Lord!
I really don't like when
You talk in these RIDDLES!"
"I am making you wait, child."
"YEAH? For WHAT?"
"For the time when you
will surrender
your pride,
to Me."
"But, I HAVE, LORD!
I HAVE! You know THAT!"
WHAT do You WANT?"
"Shhh."
(impatient silence)
(more impatient silence)
"What NOW? Here's
my PRIDE! What do
You WANT with it, Lord?"
"Only when you surrender
your pride, totally,
to Me, My Beloved."
(hopeful silence)
"Only then,
can I heal you."
****************************
O Lord,
heal me,
for my bones are troubled.
My soul also is sorely troubled.
But Thou, O Lord.....how long?
