"As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed."
Jesus the Christ IS the rock of offense! He offends people from all walks of life. His name even causes offense. Go ahead and travel to a Muslim dominated nation and just mention his name or the gospel of his name and you will quickly find out what response they are famous for...your death!
Look at Matthew 10:22, "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake." Notice Jesus' words specifically: "hated", "shall be" and "all men." He said hated. Not merely thought of unkindly or passively resisted...but HATED! The mention of our Lord's name drives people crazy. So does the preaching of his gospel and the truth. Look at Galatians 4:16, "Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?" Judaizers had brought in heresies into the Galatian church and turned people against Paul and called them out about it. He had become their enemy because he told them the truth.
The gospel of Jesus Christ holds the truth in it and people no longer care for the truth or they claim the truth is relative. If the truth is whatever we make it, then there IS NO truth because it came from human thinking. Only God holds all truth and it is good unto salvation!
Here is another example of Jesus "seeming" to be offensive or offend in his statements to religious leaders and the crowds around him:
"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins."
People are condemned because of their unbelief. The people in Jesus' time failed to believe that he was the prophesized Messiah, Anointed One, the Son of God and so they were condemned for their unbelief and would die in their sins. Look at John 3:18, "He that believeth on him is not condemned: BUT he that believeth not is condemned ALREADY, because he hath not believed in the name of the ONLY begotten Son of God." A variation of the word believe is used 3 times in that one verse folks! Do you think God wants to tell us something important there?
Preachers nowadays over look (I think maybe purposely) the fact that the gospel of Jesus Christ is highly offensive! The entire Bible teaches exclusivity NOT inclusivity! God's Word teaches absolute truth. It's either one or the other. Heaven or Hell! There is no gray area, no middle ground, no fuzzy area to hide from God.
For every man, woman and child on earth there is ONLY one hope, one salvation and one name to call upon to be saved...Jesus Christ! There is NO hope in worldly religion. The only thing you will find there is bondage and work, work and more work.
Jesus may offend people, but he says, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
In this Politically Correct (PC) world of ours where you can no longer speak your mind or speak in absolute truths without some group or someone charging you with offending them, just remember that Jesus said this, "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you." (John 15:18)
And also consider these words by Jesus from Matthew 11:6, "And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."
God Bless...and keep on offending! In a Biblical kind of way that is!
