The aim of this article is to get one thing straight and clear: world religions such as Catholicism, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness, etc. are NOT Christian!
"Oh that's just an awful thing to say Chris!" I know that's what you're thinking. It is also the truth! The evidence is overwhelming. World religions teach contrary to the Bible, to God's Word. They teach a works-based salvation or a grace plus works salvation. When you start adding ANYTHING to the grace of God, you are polluting and corrupting the Word of God. In this article we are going to examine some of the most grievous teachings of all these religions so that you will see for yourself that they are apostate, NON-Christian religions. First, we will look at the Roman Catholic teachings.
Mary is the biggest selling point in Catholicism. Without her, this religion would be nothing. Look at what she said in Luke 1:47, "And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus (not God) admitted she like every other human being needed a Saviour. The Church teaches she was sinless and a virgin until death. It also teaches that salvation is through her. Here are some quotes from former Popes in their own words about Mary:
Benedict XV, Inter Sodalicia, 1918: "To such extent did Mary suffer and almost die with her suffering and dying Son; to such extent did she surrender her maternal rights over her Son for man's salvation that we may rightly say she redeemed the human race together with Christ."
Pius IX, Ubi Primum, 1849: "For God has committed to Mary the treasury of all good things, in order that everyone may know that through her are obtained every hope, every grace, and all salvation. For this is his will, that we obtain everything through Mary."
The Pope of the Catholic Church has ultimate power and is without question. He is called the Vicar of Christ, meaning one serving as substitute. Is there a sub or stand-in for Jesus? I think not! When the Pope speaks, the Church teaches he speaks with the voice of God. Let's see what happens when someone is said to do this:
"And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost." -Acts 12:21-23
Does God share his glory with another? Lets see what he himself says, "I am the LORD: That is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images." (Isaiah 42:8) I dare you to find one born again believer, who bows down to a statue of Jesus, kisses it and prays to it. But this is what Catholics do before statues of Mary. "Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God." (Leviticus 26:1)
Google "Mary Worship" or "Shrines to Mary" and you will come up with all kinds of web sites with pictures of Catholics full on their knees before statues of Mary, kissing them, worshipping them. We as born again believers worship one true living God, Jesus Christ. Catholicism "teaches" that there is no salvation outside the Church, but does not guarantee it even within itself without works, sacraments and partaking of the Mass.
As born again believers we know that God's Word, the Bible, Scripture, has everything we need! But for the Catholic Church, Tradition is placed in equal standing with Scripture. At the Council of Trent in 1545, it was declared that Tradition (human teachings) was of EQUAL authority to the Bible. In fact, 316 years earlier the Bible was placed on the Church's forbidden books list for access to laymen (claiming that the priests alone had the ability to interpret the Bible) by the Council of Valencia in 1229 A.D. Here is a quote from the "Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 95, page 34:
"It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them CANNOT STAND WITHOUT THE OTHERS."
God's Word holds the truth of eternal life in Jesus Christ and this terrifies the Catholic Church. What I have put down here is a small taste of what the Vatican has been and is doing. Jesus is not into religion and in fact there is nothing religious about him. He did not come into the world to establish another religion, he came to set us free from it!
Mormonism has millions of people subscribing to its religious teachings today. In fact we have a Mormon running for the top office in the country in Mitt Romney. One of the biggest errors in Mormonism is the teaching that God was once a man and then "evolved" if you will to become God, and that he has a tangible body. This fully contradicts Jesus' description of God in John 4:24, "God is a Spirit." And look at Colossians 1:15, "Who is the image of the invisible God." And God many times in the Old Testament says he is not a man. God had no starting point. He is from eternity past, everlasting, from all eternity, etc.
Mormonism teaches that you can become a god and teaches that there was a pre-existence before being born in a physical body. Jesus to them was the first-born of a later host of spirit children and the spirit brother of Lucifer. In actuality, the word "Lucifer" is a word that means light bearer and is attributed to the King of Babylon in the Old Testament, not a name for Satan. And Jesus' atonement in their view is very convoluted. He atoned for Adam's sin, leaving man responsible for his own. Jesus defeated death on the cross to secure resurrection in the Mormon view.
The Mormon Church teaches a host of things to accomplish for salvation:
Baptism in a church, regular church attendance, consistent good works, attaining worthiness and temple works or rituals. So salvation for Mormons is doing good works and missionary work. Let's see what God has to say about this:
Ephesians 2:8,9 KJV
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us."
They have a three-fold position of glory or the afterlife. A variety of "kingdoms of glory" is taught where one can spend his/her afterlife as opposed to God's view of EITHER heaven OR hell.
Finally we come to the Jehovah's Witnesses. The J.W.'s teach that the Holy Ghost is an impersonal force rather than the 3rd person of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit has the attributes of personality: mind, emotions and will. Romans 8:27 says, "And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." And Ephesians 4:30 tells us this, "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."
If the Holy Spirit is just a force of God, then you can't bring grief to it and it wouldn't have a mind to think with to make intercession. But the Holy Ghost is a person. He is God! The J.W.'s are also guided by the Watchtower Society, an organization believed to have been set up by God to be his visible representative on earth. The Society has ultimate control with Scriptural meaning, claiming that people are unable to understand it. And much like the Catholic Church can excommunicate its people (kick you out of the Church), the Society can disfellowship J.W.'s if someone disobeys the Watchtower's instructions.
Translators of the New World Translation (the J.W. Bible) were found to have very little if any at all training in Hebrew and/or Greek. Frederick Franz, one of the translators, claimed to know Hebrew and Greek, but in a court of law in Edinburgh, Scotland, failed a simple Hebrew test. The J.W.'s also teach that Jesus was the angel Michael. Jesus was only a perfect man, not God in the flesh. Jesus did not rise from the dead in a physical body. You have to work for eternal life. Since eternal life is based on works, the Watchtower does not guarantee salvation. If you have to work to earn salvation, how would you ever know you did enough work? What if you converted to Mormonism and died the next day? What then?
As I said earlier, these are but a few examples of the damnable teachings these religions are putting forth. We are called by God to expose these cults that claim to be Christian and are not! Feel free to do your own research into these cults as well.
The Catholic Church has for years been attempting to unite other religions (Methodists, Lutherans, etc.) as part of their Ecumenical Movement to have a true universal Church. Methodists allow and ordain gay and lesbians to minister over the congregation. Lutheranism is diet Catholicism. And Evangelicals are being drawn into the web as well. Scores of well-known Evangelicals have joined up with the Catholic Church to help further the Ecumenical cause of having one supreme church.
In the mid to late 90's, two documents were written up known as ECT (Evangelicals and Catholics Together) I and II and signed by Catholic officials and popular Evangelicals like Dr. Richard Land (Southern Baptist), Pat Robertson (700 Club), Chuck Colson (Prison Fellowship and co-author of the ECT-Evangelicals and Catholics Together) Dr. Bill Bright (Campus Crusade), Max Lucado, Dr. James I. Packer and Billy Graham (though he did not sign the documents, he was connected with the effort).
ECT II was published in the magazine Christianity Today, Dec. 8, 1997, page 34. All the details on this diabolical campaign are on the following site:
We are called by God to separate ourselves from unbelievers, from those who do not follow the gospel of Jesus Christ, from those who try to bring in damnable heresies. There is no room for "dialogue" between born again believers and Catholics, Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. They ALL are the mission field and we should preach the ONE and ONLY gospel of Christ and not be ashamed of it. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek (Gentile)." (Romans 1:16)
I have spent a year researching world religions and the false Evangelical preachers and leaders that are yoked up with Catholicism. There are cassette tapes featuring a live recording session between R.C. Sproul, Dr. James Kennedy and John MacArthur discussing the ECT campaign. It is powerful stuff. Thankfully there are ex-Catholics (people who have been saved out of the religion) and are now witnessing to people still in the world's largest cult. Here are a few web sites to check out:
Here are some examples of Chuck Colson's yoking with Catholicism:
A former Anglican and now Southern Baptist, his wife is a Roman Catholic; he praised the Catholic chain of command and includes the Church as part of the body of Christ. His ecumenical books are praised by Catholic priests, one of which was the other author of the ECT acts, Richard John Neuhaus. He said this of the Pope: "The most hopeful words from any Christian leader today have come from John Paul II." (from "How Now Shall We Live", 1999, p. 302-303)
He also said this in the same book, "Catholics and Protestants must stand side by side. Then, standing together as the people of God, we must obey the two great commissions: first to win the lost and then to build a culture." Since when are we told by God to "build a culture?" And since when are there "two" great commissions? He also down plays the corruption of the "Harry Potter" books/films, "Not all Christians agree that the books are harmful. They contain dark themes but show the difference between good and evil, and good always wins. The characters develop courage, loyalty and a willingness to sacrifice for one another. Not bad lessons in a self-centered world."
Give me a break!
The Catholic Church is so persuasive and powerful, it scored a major victory with "The Passion of the Christ" film that Mel Gibson (a Traditionalist Catholic) put together. Mel attended Mass ever morning during filming in an effort to be "clean". In The New Yorker, Sept. 15, 2003, he said, "There is no salvation outside the Church." The film, hailed by the likes of Billy Graham, Paul Crouch, Chuck Colson, Greg Laurie, Jack Graham, Jerry Falwell and Lee Strobel incorporates the nuts and bolts of the gospel. However, the core of it is based on the writings of two Catholic mystics. Gibson admitted pulling material from the visions of St. Anne Catherine Emmerich and Mary of Agreda and has endorsed their books, which sold 17,000 copies in the month of February 2004 alone, compared to the mere 3,000 copies in all of 2003.
For a thorough examination of the film's unBiblical structure, go to this site:
Whether you want to believe it or not, Catholicism poses a deep threat to us born again believers! A once great era of Evangelicals like Billy Sunday, John Rice, Max Younce, and R.G. Lee have passed on to be with the Lord Jesus. They did not compromise in Biblical doctrine and were aggressive in their preaching. Sadly though, they have been replaced by a legion of compromisers, posers and Catholic sympathizers. A lot of people believe Billy Graham to have been a great man, but he was one of Catholicism's biggest advocates. Billy subscribed to the teachings of Norman Vincent Peale, who introduced "Christian" psychology and New Age/occult teachings. He denies the virgin birth, and said once on the Phil Donahue Show, "It's not necessary to be born again. You have your way to God, I have mine. I found eternal peace in a Shinto shrine."
Billy praised Peale's work for the kingdom of God at a luncheon on December 6, 1966. Billy also associated with apostate Robert Schuller, who teaches a man-exalting gospel; that there is no need to recognize your sinful state, no need to repent, no need to crucify one's self in Christ. Graham once said, "Robert Schuller is a great man of God, whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop and loose." At Graham's crusades, if any Catholics stepped forward, Catholic counselors would refer them back to their Catholic church for follow-up. Graham has said he won't even hold a crusade unless there is wide denominational backing.
Please visit this web site for a full history on Billy Graham's support of Rome:
In 1979, he recognized Pope John Paul II as "The moral leader of the world." In an interview from Christianity Today magazine, Graham said, "There was a new understanding between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Twenty-five years ago we could hardly speak to each other openly. In our Crusades today, thousands of Catholics feel free to attend. I have preached in Roman Catholic schools, and have even received honorary doctorates from them. This could not have happened 25 years ago." See these other sites for more on Graham:
See this site too for an article on the Catholic Mary and Holy Spirit:
"Pope John Paul II over and over has said Muslims, Jews and other non-Christians worship the true God and can get to heaven without saving faith in the merits of Jesus Christ. According to the Pope, the god of Islam's Koran is the same true and living God whom Christians worship. Last May during his audience with three Muslims at the Vatican, Pope John Paul II bowed to the Koran and kissed it." (10/18/99 CN).
This is common practice in the Catholic Church, to willingly accept world religions as being genuine and true worshippers of God. This is simply disgusting! I hope and pray I never see a born again believer doing anything like this or compromising Jesus Christ in ANY way for the sake of "unity" or for universalism!
HI Chris: Excellent article, well written and totally true.
I encourage you to write part 2 - From my own research The whole church system is in big trouble. The proclamation of Jesus in Matthew 16:18 is certainly not what we see today.(My own opinion of course). Lutherans, Anglicans, Mennonites, and even many other denominations. This Homosexual issue is a total abomination before God and and as christians in these congregations we are being brainwashed into believing its okay - if we don't know the Word - then we go along with it - all in the name of Jesus love - they have twisted the context to remain in sin.
I foresee a split in many denominations. - and there are many more issues. one being many do not belive in the Word of God or Holy Scriptures - My one concern is those of us coming out of these denominations have no where to go because I don't see any better Church choices.
I also know that God is shaking up the very foundations of the Church and He will finsih what He has started. Thank you again and keep up the good writing and research.
