"If you wish to achieve worthwhile things in your personal and career life, you must become a worthwhile person in your own self-development" - Brain Tracy (Author, consultant & speaker)
The power of self development cannot be over-emphasized; it is the bedrock from which every other activity stems forth. Recall that, private victories precedes public victories, you must first conquer a battle within before victory on the outside can be achieved.
Many people go through life without taking time to improve or add values to their most outstanding points, this is why probably they don’t make an impact nor leave an indelible mark on the sands of time. It amazes me how you prepare your physical selves, brush your teeth, get a new dress, go to the gym, enjoy nice times-towards an appointment but fail to take care of the inner person in order to embrace and overcome future challenges “if your mind is not informed, it will be deformed”
The difference between the rich and the poor is that the poor buys and buys, but the rich buys and sell. Believe me, everyone on planet earth, whether in business or not sells something. If you come to me to either sell your product or services, I will first assess you, if your appearance makes a good impression on me I will give you my audience in exchange. But if it doesn’t, you’ll have to walk out defeated. Get this dear reader, prospective potential customers first buy into the individual before they buy into what the individual has to sell. This is the essence of self development.
THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT
It might interest you to note that the process of development has three stages and we shall consider them diligently for proper assimilation, more importantly, lets view these stages from the farmer’s perspective.
If you have ever noticed any seed that grew into a strong tree, you’ll observe the exhibition of the stages I’m about to share here by the farmer (which is you) and the seed (which is what you want to develop).
1. PATIENCE: “Patience is a hunter’s surest weapon”. We are sometimes tempted to give up on things for a number of reasons. We are even sometimes tempted to dig up a planted seed. To see if there any signs of developments. But patience makes us wait and gives hope of certainty. Patience is time; time has a way of proving us wrong. If you give up too soon, you are three feet away from gold.
2. NUTURANCE: “Every matter needs food for growth and stability”. As a seed requires water, manure, etc. to support her development, so do you. You need to continually feed your dreams, ambitions, careers, visions, with a food of positive words, high expectations and deep desire to enable growth. As a farmer scares predators from his/her young plants, so should you. You need to be careful about all the things you see, hear or speak so that they don’t kill young dreams or visions.
3. ENCOURAGEMENT: “Without Encouragement, there’s no motivation”. Every farmer encourages his/her plant to grow by providing support. (See the case of yam). In like manner, we also need to provide support for what we want developed. Do you want to be a better leader? Get a good book on leadership. Do you want to speak well? Enroll in a speaking course. Whatever the case, just provide a support and you have encouraged the case towards development.
MY LAST WORDS: Think of developing anything? Think of these three stages. Especially those things concerning you and your growth. Keep brainstorming, keep searching. This is power of self development and little improvements. – Good luck.
