Christian Living
In a little over forty days from now we will be entering the year 2008. The first of each year offers an opportunity to set goals we would like to accomplish during the coming year. That is a good thing.
Some years ago I was reading 2 Peter 1: vs. 3-9 and I thought about how much I could improve my life by adding at least one Christian attribute to
my life each year. I love the letters of Peter because this impetuous, too quick to speak young disciple of Jesus had matured and was sharing his
insights with the Church. Peter recognized that Christian maturity doesn’t usually come on us in a single event, but occurs as obedience and experience guide us toward maturity in the Lord.
Peter wrote:
2Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control,
perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess
these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.10Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your
calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.[/i]
I decided I would create for my family an annual goal sheet that would allow them to think about how they could end the following year a better person.I asked each family member to complete the sheet and keep it forthemselves. They were not asked to share it with me or to be accountable for their goals to anyone except the Lord. The positive changes should be evident enough in our lives.
