One of the greatest challenges that confront most every one of us as grown up adults is that of breaking up with old habits!
As a general rule, it is a well-known fact that old habits die hard – if at all. What this translates to in everyday plain language is that once habits are formed and take a stronghold on us, they do not die easily enough without some high degree of sheer discipline on our part.
And yet, in order for us to reach out to fulfil our maximum potentials, and in order for us to move on to higher grounds in life, each one of us would need to examine our personal lifestyle from time to time with a dispassionate attitude, and with a careful view of critically examining and appraising ourselves whether there are older habits and wrong behavioural patterns that are inimical to our progress in life.
Until we are wiling to pay the stiff price of carefully cleansing the Aegean sables in our lives, and ridding ourselves of every unwanted habit, we may find that we are unwittingly limiting ourselves from reaching our utmost potentials in life and vocation. It is highly instructive here to quote the late Reverend Kenneth E Hagin who one time cautioned that we must, “Stay away from all places, all things, and all people who do not contribute to our affirmation of faith!” And I hasten to add to that list: “Stay away from all habits that will not help you to fulfil your destiny in life!”
Speaking personally for myself, I sincerely and earnestly need to break away from my cherished old habit of loving to sleep a little above 05:00 am! This matter greatly bothers my conscience because I am painfully aware that there are a whole lot I could easily and effortlessly accomplish if only I could wake up at say, 05:00 am or thereabout – adequate time for prayer and morning devotion; enough time to assist my wife with our daughters - prepare the older one for school and give the younger an early bath; as well as ample time to get early to the office in order to organize myself, sort out my priorities, effectively project ahead of the day, and proficiently manage all my tasks, assignments and schedules.
Even if for the above alone, I must continually set myself to break away with my old habit of sleeping beyond 05:00 am!
