Encouragement
It seems these days as though there is always something nasty lurking around out there just waiting to strike at us and make us ill. Usually it is explained away as a bug or a virus, but whatever it is we usually know a few people who have it.
Very soon the media will seize hold of the story and start printing articles about it full of doom and gloom. A recent scare was the Bird Flu, and reports through newspapers and television of how, if it should mutate in some way, could wipe out millions of people. Well, that should cheer us up no end!
Of course, there are genuine illnesses and diseases that we may succumb to from time to time, and they are a fact of life. If that should happen, and we are truly concerned, then it is wise to consult a skilled physician. But it is equally true that many illnesses that strike us are the result of poor thinking and a stressful state of mind.
This ranges from those who habitually say to themselves, “I just know that I will come down with this bug that’s going around” to those who have a morbid fear of some condition who convince themselves that “My father and my brother both died from heart attacks, and I know that I will as well!” Migraine, for example, is one condition that often follows an emotional pattern where a somewhat depressed person finds himself up against a problem, or situation, which he feels he cannot face.
Many people have posed the question – Is religious faith really a factor in healing? The good news is that a great deal of evidence indicates that it is. More and more people are coming to the conclusion that faith, properly understood, and applied with conviction, is a powerful force in overcoming illness, and establishing good health.
Some years ago, an Austrian doctor said, “When we are convinced of the importance of God’s help in our activities, and especially in the treatment of our patients, then true progress will have been accomplished in restoring the sick back to health.”
When we are suffering it benefits us enormously when we receive the love and support of our family and friends. But add to this the great power of our faith, and we will be tapping into an inexhaustible source of love, warmth, and tenderness that will help restore us to a healthy and vibrant life.
