Since we were small, we have always had to yield to some type of authority. We learned that lesson early in life when our parents told us “No.” God has placed authority in the world to maintain order. Without it, the world would be in total chaos.
When Jesus came to earth, even he was placed under authority. Although later in his life, he was given rule over all power.
When Christ rose from the dead, the Bible says Jesus was put in a position, by God, that was above all rule and power. Matthew 28:18…”All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Jesus became the utmost authority by his Father. Every power, ruler and kingdom bowed before him at that point. Jesus was elevated above them all. Ephesians 1:20-21…he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms. V. 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
You see, before Christ rose, he was subject to the power of death. He came to earth as a man which represented his submission. But, after his death when God raised him, death was defeated. Death, which was the earth’s final blow to mankind, was put under Jesus’ feet. He was showing that even death, something no one can prevent no matter how hard we try, can not rule over Christ. In the past, death was our final destination. It wasn’t something to look forward to but something we feared instead. But Christ, through his death and resurrection overcame the power that bound us. 1 Corinthians 15:55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” With Jesus in our lives, death is no longer something to be afraid of.
The scripture we read in Ephesians 20 states that God placed Jesus at his right hand. God is the most Supreme Being there is. In other words, he was never created but has always been. Therefore he has no one to answer to. Hence, any kind of power or kingdom that exists can not even come close to overtaking God’s throne. (Satan tried to and see where it got him). So when God placed Jesus at his right hand, any authority or power that exists has to submit to Christ. This is why the scripture says in Philippians 2:9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name v.10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. There are a lot of people who do not acknowledge Jesus, or if they do, it’s using his name wrongly. But one day, we will all stand before Christ. That includes the living and the dead, good or bad. Kings, presidents, celebrities, adults and even children will stand before his throne and when his name is spoken, “Jesus” we will all bow on our knees in reverence. It doesn’t end there.
V.11 says and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. After every knee hits the ground, every tongue will declare that Jesus is Lord. No matter what religion you’ve served, every mouth that God has created will overflow with the words “Jesus, you are Lord!” On that awesome day, the world will acknowledge Christ as the son of God.
