“Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit, they refuse to know me, saith the Lord” (Jeremiah 9:6)
As prophets go, Jeremiah never minced his words. In the beginning of his ministry Jeremiah had concerns about his abilities (sound familiar?). Jeremiah said that he couldn’t speak and that he was a youth. The Lord came back with the fact that Jeremiah would go where He sent him and whatever God told him to speak he would. The Lord gave further instruction and told Jeremiah to not be afraid of their faces. Also, God said that He would be with Jeremiah.
Today, there are some faces that we all look at that make us afraid. However, just as Jeremiah, we have to choose where our habitation will be. If we inhabit the space of the evil one by watching TV programs that have no value, speaking words of death instead of life, hanging with the wrong crowd, not spending time with God and with His Word, listening to the voice of man instead of God – our habitation will be one of deceit.
In honoring a habitation of deceit, we dishonor the Lord because we choose not to let Him be our best friend, our counselor, our provider, our sustainer, our defender, our Holy habitation. In Jeremiah’s life – just as is true in our lives – God will give a specific Word and plan to us and He expects us to believe Him and to run with it. After the Lord touched Jeremiah’s mouth and said, “Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth”, the Lord gave another declaration over Him. “See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant” (Jeremiah 9:9-10).
Unless we settle in our hearts, that the Lord is our habitation, we cannot bear the first fruits of righteousness.
