COME TASTE AND SEE THAT GOD ALMIGHTY IS FOR REAL
“COME TASTE AND SEE THAT THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY IS FOR REAL’.
Like most Caribbean countries, my country counts churches in every corner thereof. In a small district of 1000 habitants you find more than twenty churches. Going to church during my child-hood were the same as going to school, as it was an obligation says my parents, to keep me in the right path that I may not go astray. Approaching my mid-teenage years I preferred dancehall, dance music, everything that had to do with the outside world, as says my pastor:” teenagers are lost these days. They preferred the hog food, which he referred to the hip-hop, raga, dance music etc, but I’ve find comfort listening to the hog food.
There were an evangelist church members heard about the violence carried out in the district by a group of teenagers who’d ‘lost’, as says the preacher. Most of these teenagers didn’t have family members or their families had thrown them out of the houses because of their unruly behavior. Situations like these are also the church business, so they decide to build a ten in town. Not only for the teenagers but for everyone who need someone, that they can learn that they’re not alone the savior is always here to keep and guide them. I’ve observed these evangelists who even working with some teenagers helping teaching them to read and write, so they were some sort of guidance councilor.
This tent were about a hundred meter from my home, one night, before going to sleep; I heard the musical instruments and the preacher speech. It was impossible for me to close mine eyes, so I took a walk to see if milk and honey fell from the sky. Something caught mine eyes; they were a board which shows the night’s topic. This nigh, it was” COME TASTE AND SEE’. Immediately I taught about the image that these churches gave about paradise. Crowds gathered. I taught that most of them were curious as I am. While steering inside, I felt a top on my shoulder. It was the evangelist who told me to come and take a seat. I’ve sits in the last rows as if I’m just as spectator. They ask for six volunteers. One had volunteer, then suddenly this group of teenagers’ volunteers. By watching this play, even a touch hearted person heart melts away. I remember when one of the teenagers had his eyes blind fooled, because he was the one who says he doesn’t believe in god. The preacher told him:” Talk to God tell him what you’re waiting of him, tell him everything that comes to your heart’. The boy shouted in an angry voice”, you’d never done anything for me. I’ve never seen you. If you’re the lord God almighty, help me to be a better person?’He broke down on his knees and started crying. His face was sad but his eyes reflect that his belief had increases. He get up and took the mike with is eyes up in the skies, then he say:” What a day it will be when I Jesus I shall see. When I looked up on his face, the one that save me by his grace, then he takes me by the hand and lead me to that promised land. Faith in Christ, pray for me while I continues in Jesus name, amen.’ Some people were amazed even myself. The preacher says, accordingly to the bible, God helps those who help themselves. The boy take off the foulard from his eyes and ask the preacher:” Then why he helps those who doesn’t need help?’Before the preacher could answer, his friend who stands behind him says:’ God doesn’t help those who are not in need, but he pours his blessings on them and their wealth increases’. The boy didn’t try to have another reason, he stand to give a testimony. He said, lord look at what taking place. Help me to use my strength to help myself and others, than to use it to break down. Let me be a new me. Give me the strength to rebuild what I’ve broken down. Increase my knowledge because I’m locked. I’m feeling like a sheep which gone astray. It was impossible to believe that they were they boys of yesterday and today they’d changed. After the ceremony, he asks to speak with the evangelist. She told him that god, is able all he’d to do is keep on praying. And he’d not to forgot that god help those who helps themselves. He can’t sits and wait for things to fell from the skies all this are fairy tales but if he really need something and he does something towards it he will be rewarded. These people had changed the lives of these teenagers. They knew that all the government will do with them is puts them in prison when they’d done something wrong, but prison not always helps. What they need is to puts their energy at work and their mind will fallow. By observing and listening to what happens, as says my old folks, every ‘history has an end’. Now I’ve learned that that’s not always true. Churches who speak about love, accordingly to the bible say:’ love thy neighbor as you’d love thy self’. Is this possible. Will the church oneday saves humanity? Will the church oneday along with the government changed this world? It’s a rhetorical question for me. Just to take a look of what is happening in our world, will all these has an end? Will the war over in Iraq and there’s a day when you can listened to the news and there’s no killings? The tribal wars, famine and sicknesses in Africa and even some parts in Asia, will there be an end? Maybe as some Christians believes, there’ll be an end when Christ return on earth for his chosen ones.
