Why do some Christians say " If you are saved and have the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues....." ?
Why not say " If you are saved and have the Holy Spirit with the evidence of the spiritual gift of healing......? or prophecy?
I can see that there are Christians who are confused as to what the Holy Spirit is. The Holy Spirit is the gift promised by Jesus to come after Him. Jesus died and arose again and after he acended into Heaven and was glorified there by God the Holy Spirit was sent to us. The Holy Spirit comes into you at the same time Jesus calls you to Him. It is a gift from God, not something you have to work towards after you become a Christian and it is NOT speaking in tongues! Tongues is one of the spiritual gifts that is given by the spirit, it is not THE Holy Spirit.
In 1Corithians 12:4-6 it says " There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works through all of them in all men. Doesn't this mean that there are several different ways to service the same Lord. And that not all will work or have the same gift?
It continues in 1Corinthians 12:7-11 where it says, "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given to the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another the meessage of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking different kinds of tongues (languages), and to still another the interpetation of tongues. All these are the work of one Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines." Doesn't this mean the Spirit gives certain gifts of the Spirit to certain people for the common good that it will do at that time and that it is the same God that does it all?
1 Corinthians 12:12-26 goes on to talk about we all have different gifts that are given to us by the Holy Spirit and that we all come together with our different gifts to form one "Body". It also says we can not take out one body part because otherwise it would not be a whole body. What would the body of Christ be without its arms to reach out to people or feet to go to them? Therefore we must come together as a whole to form one body to preform the work of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:27- 31 "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you are apart of it. And in the church God has appointed first the apostles, second the prophets, third the teachers, then worker of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with the gifts of administration, and those speaking in different tonuges(or other languages). Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues(other languages)? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts.
Did you notice that teachers are above miracle doers and healing? Did you notice that those able to help others are way before speaking in tongues? And at the end it says "But eargerly desire the greater gifts." What that means is that always have it in your heart to want to what the Spirit wants you to. If the Holy Spirit says "go teach that person", be willing to use that gift when He wants you to use it.
In 1 Corinthians 14:3-5 Paul is telling the church of Corinth that strengthening and encouraging others is way more important and helpful to the church than speaking in tongues (or other languages). And in verse 19 it says "But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instuct others than tenthousand words in a tongue." Also in 1Corinthians 14:39-40 Paul in insturcts the church of Corinth that "Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way."
I finally grasped the meaning of this: "On God's stolid rock I stand, all other ground is sinkingsand!" Use the Bible as our rock which is the only firm foundation that is never wrong. All other things will sink beneath it! You say you want to be closer to God to KNOW Him, to know Him is to know His word. You may say "well, I don't like to read...." But how can God reveal His truth and wonderful power to you if you don't have the discipline to read His word? If you have the discipline to read God's word there is no chance of you not becoming closer to God. Luke 11:9-10 says "So I say to you, Ask and keep on asking and it shall be given you; seek and keep on seeking and you shall find; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened to you. For anyone who asks and keeps on asking recieves; and he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds; and to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened." Show God that you are disciplined and readily waiting for Him to reveal His word to you, read you Bible.
