City Night Breezes

Wafting foul and sweet

The greasy lid squealed off the can. Pawing through the stinky trash, Mike saw, with wine bleared eyes, a half burger that smelled almost fresh and a tract. Bemusedly, he turned the pages with grimy fingers while chewing. He laughed raucously at first. Suddenly he fell into the gutter, weeping.

A shift in the wind

Zelda stood in a slinky dress by the streetlight, hunger gnawing. With thoughts of her emaciated child, she waited, crying, “Where’s God?” A shiny Mercedes stopped. As she sashayed up, a rust bucket rolled up behind. The wrinkled lady called, “Zelda, we have a place.” Zelda praised God in relief.

Powerful Spirits

Rodney paced the rain slicked cobbles. The Beer sign blinked its siren call. He remembered the evangelist’s words, “The Bible will keep you from alcohol.” Shaking, he turned toward the door, but suddenly slipped, landing on a planter. Opening his Bible, he stared at it blindly until the urge passed.

Stealing Your Breath

“Ready, Sam?” Called an emaciated Mike.
“Let’s leave these degenerate Christians,” responded the world weary Sam.
Strains of “The Rugged Cross” followed them down the alley where Sam exchanged money for drugs.
“Hey,” Mike yelled, “You shorted me.”
Mike argued. A gun replied. He cursed God with his last breath.

Spirits of the Dead

Feeling useless with Christians disparaging her divorced status, Sally wondered, “Why am I here?” Nervously, she opened the tract. One man snorted and left. Another listened, saying nothing. She handed a woman the tract before falling prey to doubts herself. Weeping alerted her. As they prayed, Sally felt God’s valuation.
