As I lay back on a fallen log, looking up at the mountains before me, the sun is setting behind me, painting the crags in a majestic purple, red, and indigo. Their hue is so vibrant that it’s almost intoxicating.
In front of me is a lake. I hear the sound of fish, breaking the surface of the water for their evening meal of insects. Their sound reminds me of the applause that a golfer receives when he just made an tedious putt; or perhaps the fish, if it were all possible, are capture by the beauty that is befalling on the world and applauding the one who is orchestrating the evening events.
Off in the distant, the lonely cry of a bull moose can be heard; his call reminds me of a French horn echoing the response of a symphonic call. A gaggle of geese fly in formation, circling the lake, and then gently glide in upon the surface of the water, trumpeting their arrival. And I feel like this is a prelude of something wonderful is coming.
The audience for tonight’s fugue is starting to gather. A deer and her two fawns are across the lake being watched by a ten point buck. A beaver lazily swims across the lake like a stagehand sweeping the stage before the show starts. Hoot owls, eagles, and red tail hawks could be heard in the near by trees; a woodpecker tap out its anticipation of this evening concert while other birds of the forest fly about in flights of joy. The serenity, splendor, and glory that come with such scenes are almost too wonderful to take in, because for the first time in my life, I understand.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes,
His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly seen,
being understood through what has been made,
so that they are without excuse.
I understand that this is a gift given to me from a God, whose very creation praises His name through their calls and scenery. And this God is also a secret admirer of ours. An admirer who paints phenomenal landscapes with his fingers. A suitor who voice is in the trees and in the birds of the air, a lover who caresses us and holds our souls in his hands and whisper in our ears, in a very deliberate manner – “I…LOVE…YOU”. This love He has for us is a type of love that melts away all excuses; a type of love that goes right to the heart of the pursued and the only reaction that is left is sweet surrender; a type of love that says as only God can say - “I’m here and all of this is for you.” For He is a lover that has His hearts towards us – we are the objects of His affection. Like a Lover, He presents us glimpses of our eternal home on a daily basis and showers us with blessings and gifts. No matter what we have done or will do could drive us away from His love.
Just to be with you I'd do anything
There's no price I would not pay
Just to be with you I'd give everything
Oh I'd give my life away
“Love Song” – Third Day
What I am watching unfold before me, makes me full aware of the power and awesomeness and sovereignty of the One who pursues me. God isn’t just a judge who wants to throw lightening bolts at those He finds displeasure in, for mercy cries out to Him and grace goes before Him. But how sad it is for some who reject His mercy and grace, for all that is left for them is His wrath. Nevertheless, it is this God, who loves us from the bottom of His heart, who will move mountains just to rescue us from the dungeon of sin that we find ourselves in on a daily basis. This admirer has walked upon the raging sea of our lives to bring his peace and serenity to our tumultuous lives. This Brother gave up his life only to pick it up again so that many of us can have a relationship with our Father; we are His passion, His reason for the fight
I understand, that since time has begun, this wonderful God who always gives us His best, has pursued us. He satisfies the hunger that drives many of us to seek Him. He quenches the thirsty with living waters from a well that will never run dry. And the only thing He has ever told us to do was to have faith in Him. That’s why I understand.
I understand that it is futile to run away from the Lover of my soul. After what He did to bring us back to Him, why should I be afraid? All that is left for us to do is surrender, ah sweet surrender – total abandonment to the One who made us in His image
And I don’t know what the future is holdin’ in store
I don’t know where I’m goin’, I’m not sure where I’ve been
There’s a spirit that guides me, a light that shines for me
My life is worth the livin’, I don’t need to see the end
“Sweet Surrender” - John Denver
He has made my life worth living. He has given me hope; for one day, I will see my redeemer stand on this earth. And that makes me glad
