The River and the Word.

“Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”, and it was so.
And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. And God saw that it was good” (Gen 1:9-10 NKJ)
God created the seas before the rivers out of springs from dry land to connect and empty into the sea. The major difference between rivers and other bodies of water is that rivers do flow.

It was usual for traditional and ancient man to gravitate towards sources of water supply; therefore earliest civilizations like the Nile civilizations derive their name from the rivers that nurture them into maturity and significance. Even in modern days, many towns, and states or territories derive their names from rivers. The water derived from rivers is fresh and useful water in many respects as against the sea water which is usually salty and dense. We recall, the psalmist describe the blessed man as ‘a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither, and whatever he does shall prosper”. {Ps. 1.3 NKJ}

Throughout history, including Biblical history, we see the importance of rivers in the life of man. The significance of river Jordan in the life of the God’s people: the drinking, the washing, the navigating, the miraculous crossing on dry land across the river are all important watersheds in the life of the Israelites.
We learn about the river that parted into four heads and its symbolic importance. Jesus, our Lord also made several references and illusions to river to emphasize the importance.

The significance of baptism by emersion, dying to sin and being alive in Christ occupies a prominent place in the faith of Christians.

Jesus also described the Word of God as living water that we drink and also washes clean. At the ministration to the Samarian woman at by the side of the well, Jesus said those who drink the water that he gives but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst, “but the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (Jn 4:14). And later he said about those who believe, “out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water”. (Jn. 7:38). The more living water we drink, the higher the flow that comes out from us to bless us and others too.

Rivers also bring inspiration and provide congenial atmosphere for meditation and appreciating God. King David sang “by the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, when we remember Zion” (Ps. 137:1). During times of captivity or distress, riverside may provide appropriate mood to meditate and remember God’s goodness.

Whether it is Euphrates, Mississippi, Nile, Niger, Zambezi, Thames, Rhine, Congo, Amazon, great rivers recur in history because like all physical structure. They outlive man in his physical form but the living water makes us outlive creation in the spirit. We live forever.
